Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Nursery Bed Preparation Practices

Abstract

The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of nursery bed preparation practices. Proper nursery bed preparation is an important stage in crop production because it provides suitable conditions for seed germination, seedling establishment, and healthy early plant growth. Appropriate preparation of nursery beds can improve soil condition, drainage, moisture management, and seedling development. Agricultural extension provides farmers with technical information and practical guidance that can improve their knowledge and application of appropriate nursery bed preparation practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services on nursery bed preparation and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended practices. It will also identify the major nursery bed preparation methods used by farmers and determine the types of extension information provided on site selection, bed dimensions, soil preparation, drainage, levelling, and incorporation of suitable organic materials. The study will consider practices such as selection of suitable nursery sites, proper clearing, soil loosening, bed formation, levelling, drainage provision, and preparation of fine soil conditions for planting. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of nursery bed preparation practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ access to agricultural extension information on nursery bed preparation and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the commonly adopted nursery bed preparation techniques and the major challenges farmers encounter during preparation. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education and practical demonstrations are required to improve farmers’ skills in preparing suitable nursery beds. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, crop development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of agricultural extension in promoting appropriate nursery bed preparation. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations on nursery site selection, soil preparation, bed formation, and drainage management. Improved nursery bed preparation practices may contribute to better seedling establishment, healthier crop growth, and improved farm productivity. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of agricultural extension to farmers’ adoption of appropriate nursery bed preparation practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and improved access to technical information on nursery management. These measures may strengthen farmers’ ability to prepare suitable nursery beds and support efficient and sustainable crop production.
