Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Use of Site-Specific Fertilizer Recommendations

Abstract

Site-specific fertilizer recommendations are an important approach to improving fertilizer management by considering the nutrient requirements and characteristics of individual farm locations. Unlike generalized fertilizer recommendations, site-specific recommendations can account for variations in soil fertility, crop requirements, field conditions, and expected yield levels. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with the information and technical guidance required to understand and use fertilizer recommendations that are appropriate for their specific farm conditions. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ use of site-specific fertilizer recommendations. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services and determine how these services influence their awareness, understanding, and use of fertilizer recommendations developed for specific farm locations. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply site-specific fertilizer recommendations in their crop production activities. The study will focus on farmers’ use of soil-test information, field-specific nutrient requirements, recommended fertilizer types, application rates, timing, placement methods, crop-specific nutrient needs, and yield targets. Attention will also be given to advisory activities such as farm visits, soil fertility consultations, training programmes, field demonstrations, farmer group meetings, and provision of technical fertilizer information. These services may improve farmers’ ability to make fertilizer decisions based on the specific conditions of their farms. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption and utilization scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ use of site-specific fertilizer recommendations. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher use of site-specific fertilizer recommendations. Advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of soil fertility information, recommended fertilizer rates, nutrient requirements, application timing, and field-specific fertilizer management. However, limited access to soil testing, inadequate advisory contact, high costs of soil analysis, limited availability of technical information, and farmers’ reliance on generalized fertilizer recommendations may restrict effective use of site-specific recommendations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil scientists, fertilizer suppliers, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural advisory services to improved fertilizer decision-making and identify challenges affecting farmers’ use of site-specific recommendations. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in designing advisory programmes that promote efficient and location-specific nutrient management. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can play an important role in improving farmers’ use of site-specific fertilizer recommendations. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen field-based advisory services, promote access to affordable soil testing, organize practical demonstrations on site-specific fertilizer management, and provide farmers with clear and understandable fertilizer recommendations. These measures can improve fertilizer-use efficiency, reduce inappropriate nutrient application, support soil fertility management, and contribute to sustainable agricultural production.
