Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Livestock Drinking Water Management

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of livestock drinking water management. Adequate and clean drinking water is essential for maintaining livestock health, growth, productivity, and general welfare. Livestock drinking water management involves appropriate practices for sourcing, storing, providing, cleaning, and maintaining water for animals. Farmers’ knowledge of these practices is important because poor water management can affect livestock performance and increase the risk of contamination and other management problems. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of livestock drinking water management is therefore important for understanding their capacity to provide suitable drinking water for livestock. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of livestock drinking water management. It will specifically assess farmers’ knowledge of livestock water requirements, suitable water sources, water storage, cleaning of watering facilities, prevention of water contamination, regular water provision, monitoring of water quality, and proper maintenance of livestock drinking equipment. The study will also examine farmers’ awareness of the importance of adequate and clean drinking water for livestock health, growth, productivity, and welfare. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge and awareness of livestock drinking water management practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of livestock drinking water management. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of livestock drinking water management. Farmers may demonstrate greater knowledge of the need to provide water regularly, while knowledge of appropriate water storage, water quality monitoring, cleaning of watering facilities, and prevention of contamination may be comparatively limited. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ understanding of livestock-specific water requirements and appropriate practices for maintaining safe and accessible drinking water. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, livestock development agencies, veterinary and animal production institutions, policymakers, farmer organizations, and other stakeholders involved in livestock development. The findings are expected to identify areas where farmers require additional education and practical guidance on livestock drinking water management. Such information can assist extension personnel in developing training programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of water hygiene, storage, quality management, and maintenance of livestock watering facilities. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of livestock drinking water management is important for maintaining healthy and productive livestock. It will recommend strengthening agricultural extension education on livestock water management, providing practical demonstrations on proper water provision and facility maintenance, improving farmers’ access to reliable information on livestock water requirements, and promoting regular cleaning and monitoring of livestock drinking facilities. Improving farmers’ knowledge of livestock drinking water management is expected to support better animal health, welfare, and productivity.
