Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Produce Batch Coding

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce batch coding. Agricultural produce batch coding involves assigning unique numbers, letters, symbols, or combinations of identifiers to specific groups or batches of farm produce to facilitate identification, documentation, monitoring, and traceability. Knowledge of batch coding can help farmers organize produce, maintain accurate records, monitor product movement, and respond appropriately to quality or marketing requirements. Farmers therefore require adequate understanding of batch coding procedures and their relevance to agricultural production and marketing. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of agricultural produce batch coding. It will specifically examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of batch codes, the purposes of batch coding, methods of assigning codes to farm produce, information associated with batch codes, and the importance of batch coding for produce identification and traceability. The study will also identify farmers’ major sources of information on batch coding and the challenges that may affect their knowledge of the practice. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge, awareness, sources of information, and exposure to agricultural produce batch coding. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce batch coding. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension education, training programmes, organized markets, and produce management information are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of batch coding procedures. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to code creation, batch identification, record maintenance, labelling, and the use of batch information for tracking produce through different stages of the agricultural value chain. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural value-chain development. The findings are expected to highlight areas where farmers require additional education and technical support on batch coding. Improved knowledge may help farmers improve produce identification, maintain accurate records, strengthen traceability, monitor product movement, and respond more effectively to quality management and marketing requirements. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural produce batch coding is important for effective produce identification, documentation, and traceability. It will recommend strengthened extension education, practical demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and simplified guidelines on batch coding procedures. Improving farmers’ knowledge of batch coding is expected to contribute to better record keeping, product tracking, quality management, accountability, and efficiency within agricultural production and marketing systems.
