Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Innovation Demonstration Events

Abstract

Agricultural innovation demonstration events provide opportunities for farmers to observe, understand, and learn about new agricultural technologies, practices, and production methods through practical presentations and field-based activities. These events may be organized by agricultural extension agencies, research institutions, universities, development organizations, and other agricultural stakeholders. Farmers’ knowledge of such events is important because awareness and understanding can improve their access to practical information and create opportunities to learn about innovations that may be relevant to their farming activities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural innovation demonstration events. It will examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of demonstration events and determine their level of knowledge regarding their purpose, activities, and potential benefits. The study will also identify the major sources through which farmers obtain information about agricultural innovation demonstration events and assess the extent to which extension services contribute to farmers’ awareness of such events. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural field demonstrations, innovation showcases, technology exhibitions, research demonstrations, farmer field events, agricultural fairs, and other practical events where new agricultural innovations are presented. Areas of assessment will include awareness of event objectives, types of innovations demonstrated, event locations, participation procedures, sources of information, and potential benefits of attending such events. Farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension agents, research institutions, farmer organizations, agricultural media, and digital information platforms will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to determine farmers’ levels of awareness and knowledge of agricultural innovation demonstration events. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to agricultural information and their knowledge of innovation demonstration events. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural innovation demonstration events. Farmers who have greater contact with extension agents, farmer organizations, research institutions, agricultural programmes, and digital information sources may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge than farmers with limited exposure. The study may also reveal that some farmers have limited awareness of demonstration events despite their potential usefulness for learning about new agricultural technologies and practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, research institutions, agricultural development agencies, universities, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving the communication and promotion of agricultural innovation demonstration events. The findings may also assist extension agencies and event organizers in identifying information gaps and developing effective awareness strategies that increase farmers’ access to practical agricultural innovation information. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of agricultural innovation demonstration events is important for improving access to practical information and strengthening the dissemination of agricultural innovations. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and event organizers provide regular information about upcoming demonstration events through extension visits, farmer groups, radio, digital platforms, and other accessible communication channels. Practical and farmer-centred demonstration activities should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ awareness and understanding of emerging agricultural innovations.
