Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Shoe-Making Techniques

Abstract

Vocational education provides adults with practical knowledge and skills that can support occupational competence, self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and income generation. Shoe-making is an important practical craft that requires knowledge of materials, tools, production procedures, and appropriate finishing techniques. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of shoe-making techniques due to inadequate vocational exposure and insufficient opportunities for practical learning. This study will examine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of shoe-making techniques. Vocational education in shoe-making may expose adults to different aspects of footwear production, including identification and selection of leather and other materials, measurement, pattern preparation, cutting, stitching, assembling, sole attachment, shaping, and finishing. Learning activities may involve demonstrations, practical exercises, supervised production tasks, discussions, and repeated use of relevant tools and materials. Such activities can provide adults with opportunities to connect vocational knowledge with practical shoe-making procedures. Adults’ knowledge of shoe-making techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, processes, and procedures required for producing footwear. This knowledge may include identifying suitable materials, understanding measurement and pattern preparation, applying appropriate cutting and stitching procedures, assembling shoe components, attaching soles, and carrying out finishing activities. Effective vocational education can strengthen this knowledge by providing systematic instruction and practical experiences that enable adults to understand the sequence and purpose of different production techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a shoe-making techniques knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of relevant materials, tools, and production procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of shoe-making techniques. The study is expected to establish that vocational education can improve adults’ knowledge of shoe-making techniques. Adults exposed to structured vocational learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of material selection, measurement, pattern preparation, cutting, stitching, assembling, sole attachment, and finishing procedures. The findings may further show that demonstrations, supervised practical activities, and repeated practice contribute to adults’ understanding of the sequence and appropriate application of shoe-making techniques. The study will conclude that vocational education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of shoe-making techniques. It will recommend that vocational education programmes provide adequate practical sessions, relevant tools and materials, demonstrations, supervised production activities, and opportunities for repeated practice. Strengthening adults’ knowledge of shoe-making techniques may contribute to improved vocational competence, creativity, self-reliance, entrepreneurship, small-scale footwear production, and income-generating opportunities
