Impact of Research Literacy Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Survey Results

Abstract

Research literacy education is important in developing adults’ ability to understand, examine, and evaluate information generated through research activities. Survey results are often presented using percentages, frequencies, tables, charts, summaries, and descriptive statements, and adults may encounter such information in educational, workplace, community, and public settings. Limited research literacy may make it difficult for individuals to determine whether survey results are clearly presented, appropriately interpreted, and adequately supported by the information provided. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of research literacy education on adults’ ability to evaluate survey results. Research literacy education involves providing adults with basic knowledge and skills for understanding research processes and interpreting research information. It may include instruction on survey objectives, respondents, samples, data collection, presentation of findings, percentages, tables, charts, and research conclusions. Through practical exercises, guided discussions, and analysis of simple survey reports, adults can develop greater familiarity with how survey information is generated, presented, and interpreted. Adults’ ability to evaluate survey results refers to their capacity to examine survey findings critically, understand the information presented, compare reported results, recognize important patterns, and determine whether conclusions are consistent with the findings. Effective evaluation also involves distinguishing reported findings from unsupported interpretations and considering the information available before reaching a judgment. Research literacy education is expected to strengthen this ability by improving adults’ understanding of survey methods, data presentation, evidence, and research interpretation. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a survey-results evaluation assessment containing tables, percentages, charts, and brief survey summaries for participants to examine. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of research literacy education on adults’ ability to evaluate survey results. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to research literacy education demonstrate improved ability to evaluate survey results compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate greater ability to interpret presented data, compare survey findings, identify important patterns, assess the consistency between findings and conclusions, and recognize unsupported interpretations. These improvements may enable adults to engage more carefully with survey-based information. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of basic research and data-evaluation skills in adult learning programmes. Educators can use simplified survey reports, tables, charts, percentages, and practical research examples to help learners develop confidence in evaluating survey findings. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, researchers, and individuals who regularly encounter survey results when making judgments or decisions. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical research literacy activities that enable adults to examine and evaluate survey results. Educators should provide learners with opportunities to interpret tables and charts, compare findings, examine conclusions, and assess whether claims are supported by the reported information. It is concluded that research literacy education can improve adults’ ability to evaluate survey results and promote more informed, critical, and evidence-based engagement with research information.
