Impact of Creative Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Digital Image Composition

Abstract

Digital image composition refers to the purposeful arrangement of visual elements within a digital image to create balance, clarity, emphasis, harmony, and effective communication. Creative learning can provide adults with knowledge and practical skills for understanding and applying basic principles of digital image composition. Adequate knowledge of composition is important for producing visually organized images, improving digital communication, and developing creative skills for personal, educational, and livelihood activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of creative learning on adults’ knowledge of digital image composition. Creative learning can expose adults to digital image composition through practical exercises, visual demonstrations, guided projects, group activities, image analysis, and the use of digital editing applications. These learning activities can introduce participants to principles such as balance, alignment, framing, contrast, emphasis, symmetry, visual hierarchy, and appropriate placement of subjects within an image. Learners can also examine sample images and practise applying different composition principles to their own digital images. Such hands-on activities can enable adults to connect creative concepts with practical digital image production. Adults’ knowledge of digital image composition refers to their ability to identify, explain, and apply basic principles used to organize visual elements effectively within digital images. This includes understanding subject placement, framing, balance, visual emphasis, alignment, proportion, contrast, and the effective use of available space. Improved knowledge can help adults make more deliberate decisions when creating or evaluating digital images. Creative learning is therefore expected to strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for experimentation, observation, feedback, and practical application of composition principles. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected creative learning, digital media, photography, and Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate digital image composition knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant composition principles. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of creative learning on adults’ knowledge of digital image composition. The study is expected to establish that creative learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of digital image composition. Adults exposed to relevant creative learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify composition principles and explain their appropriate application in digital images. The study may also indicate that practical image-analysis exercises and creative projects are useful for strengthening adults’ understanding of visual organization. Such findings would demonstrate the value of creative learning in developing digital visual literacy and practical image-making knowledge. The study is significant because improved knowledge of digital image composition can support effective visual communication, creativity, digital content production, and participation in photography and related creative activities. It is recommended that creative learning programmes incorporate practical image-making exercises, visual demonstrations, image analysis, digital projects, and constructive feedback. Adult educators and creative-learning facilitators should also expose learners to different composition principles and provide opportunities for repeated practical application. The study concludes that creative learning can serve as an important means of improving adults’ knowledge of digital image composition and strengthening their ability to create and evaluate well-organized digital images.
