Impact of Craft Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basket-Weaving Techniques

Abstract

Basket weaving is a practical craft activity that involves the use of appropriate materials, tools, patterns, and techniques to produce functional and decorative woven products. Craft education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support creativity, vocational development, cultural expression, and income-generating activities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of basket-weaving techniques due to inadequate exposure to structured craft learning. This study will examine the impact of craft education on adults’ knowledge of basket-weaving techniques. Craft education may expose adults to different basket-weaving materials, tools, preparation methods, weaving patterns, joining techniques, shaping procedures, and finishing methods. Learning activities may include demonstrations, material identification, pattern exercises, guided practice, and practical basket-weaving activities. Through these experiences, adults can develop familiarity with the stages involved in basket production and understand how different techniques contribute to the strength, appearance, and functionality of woven products. Adults’ knowledge of basket-weaving techniques refers to their ability to identify, describe, explain, and apply basic procedures used in producing woven baskets. This may include knowledge of material preparation, starting techniques, weaving patterns, shaping, joining, edge finishing, and product maintenance. Craft education may improve this knowledge by providing practical opportunities for adults to observe weaving processes, practise different techniques, and develop familiarity with relevant materials and tools. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected craft, vocational, or adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a basket-weaving techniques knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant materials, procedures, and techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of craft education on adults’ knowledge of basket-weaving techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in craft education may improve adults’ knowledge of basket-weaving techniques. Adults exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of material preparation, weaving patterns, shaping, joining, edge finishing, and other basic weaving procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on activities are useful for helping adults understand and apply different basket-weaving techniques. The study will conclude that craft education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of basket-weaving techniques. It will recommend that craft education programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, appropriate weaving materials and tools, guided exercises, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ knowledge of basket-weaving techniques may contribute to practical competence, creativity, cultural craft preservation, self-employment, small-scale enterprise development, and income-generating opportunities
