Impact of Conflict-Resolution Education on Adults’ Ability to Handle Community Disagreements
Abstract
Conflict-resolution education refers to structured learning experiences designed to equip individuals with knowledge and practical approaches for managing disagreements constructively. Adults frequently encounter disagreements within families, workplaces, associations, neighbourhoods, and other community settings, making the ability to handle such situations an important aspect of peaceful social interaction. Conflict-resolution education can expose adults to constructive approaches for understanding differences, communicating effectively, managing emotions, and seeking acceptable solutions. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of conflict-resolution education on adults’ ability to handle community disagreements. Conflict-resolution education may involve learning activities such as group discussions, role-playing, case studies, simulations, guided dialogue, problem-solving exercises, and collaborative activities. Through these approaches, adults can examine common sources of community disagreements and learn strategies such as active listening, respectful communication, negotiation, compromise, mediation, and collaborative problem-solving. Practical learning activities can provide opportunities for adults to consider different perspectives and practise appropriate responses to disagreement. Such experiences may strengthen their capacity to apply conflict-resolution principles to situations encountered in their communities. Adults’ ability to handle community disagreements refers to their capacity to respond to disputes in a calm, constructive, and solution-oriented manner. This ability may involve identifying the nature of a disagreement, listening to different viewpoints, communicating concerns respectfully, controlling emotional reactions, seeking common interests, negotiating possible solutions, and working toward mutually acceptable outcomes. Effective handling of disagreements can reduce unnecessary escalation and support cooperation among community members. Conflict-resolution education is expected to strengthen this ability by providing adults with relevant knowledge and opportunities to practise constructive approaches to disagreement. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, community learning, or conflict-resolution programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate situational assessment designed to measure adults’ ability to handle community disagreements. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of conflict-resolution education on adults’ ability to handle community disagreements. The study is expected to establish that conflict-resolution education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to handle community disagreements. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant conflict-resolution learning will demonstrate greater ability to listen to opposing views, communicate respectfully, manage disagreements, identify areas of common interest, negotiate solutions, and use compromise appropriately. The findings may also indicate that practical and participatory learning activities provide adults with greater confidence in applying conflict-resolution approaches to realistic community situations. Such outcomes would highlight the value of educational interventions that develop constructive approaches to community disagreements. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, community development practitioners, facilitators, civil society organizations, and other groups involved in community learning and peacebuilding activities. Conflict-resolution education programmes can incorporate practical exercises that allow adults to examine realistic disagreements and practise appropriate responses. Facilitators may also emphasize active listening, respectful communication, negotiation, compromise, and collaborative problem-solving as important components of effective conflict management. These learning experiences can help adults develop practical capacities for dealing with disagreements in their communities. The study is significant because adults who are better equipped to handle community disagreements may contribute to more peaceful communication, cooperation, and constructive relationships within their communities. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education and community learning programmes integrate conflict-resolution content and practical activities that encourage dialogue, negotiation, compromise, and collaborative problem-solving. Adult educators should also create learning environments where participants can examine different perspectives and practise peaceful responses to disagreements. The study concludes that conflict-resolution education can provide an important educational foundation for strengthening adults’ ability to handle community disagreements constructively.
