Impact of Automotive Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Vehicle Diagnostic Tools

Abstract

Automotive education provides adults with practical knowledge and skills required to understand vehicle systems, identify faults, and carry out appropriate maintenance and diagnostic activities. Vehicle diagnostic tools are important instruments used to examine vehicle systems, detect faults, retrieve diagnostic information, and support accurate troubleshooting. However, limited knowledge of these tools may reduce adults’ ability to identify vehicle problems and interpret diagnostic information effectively. This study will examine the impact of automotive education on adults’ knowledge of vehicle diagnostic tools. Automotive education may expose adults to different vehicle diagnostic tools and their applications, including scan tools, code readers, multimeters, test lights, battery testers, and other electronic diagnostic equipment. Learning activities may involve demonstrations, discussions, tool identification exercises, practical testing, fault-diagnosis activities, and supervised workshop practice. These activities can help adults understand the functions, operating procedures, safety precautions, and appropriate applications of different diagnostic tools when examining vehicle systems. Adults’ knowledge of vehicle diagnostic tools refers to their ability to identify, describe, and explain the functions and appropriate uses of diagnostic equipment in automotive maintenance. This may include knowledge of tool identification, diagnostic procedures, reading fault codes, measuring electrical values, interpreting test results, and observing appropriate safety practices. Automotive education can strengthen this knowledge by combining theoretical explanations with practical demonstrations and hands-on activities that allow adults to interact with diagnostic tools and understand their applications. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected automotive education, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a vehicle diagnostic tools knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant tools, functions, procedures, and safety practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of automotive education on adults’ knowledge of vehicle diagnostic tools. The study is expected to establish that automotive education can improve adults’ knowledge of vehicle diagnostic tools. Adults exposed to structured automotive learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of diagnostic tool identification, functions, operating procedures, fault-code reading, electrical measurements, interpretation of diagnostic results, and safety precautions. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised workshop activities enhance adults’ ability to understand and appropriately use different vehicle diagnostic tools. The study will conclude that automotive education can provide an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of vehicle diagnostic tools. It will recommend that automotive education programmes provide adequate diagnostic equipment, practical demonstrations, supervised diagnostic exercises, and opportunities for repeated hands-on practice. Improved knowledge of vehicle diagnostic tools may contribute to greater automotive competence, effective fault identification, improved maintenance practices, self-reliance, vocational development, and income-generating opportunities
