Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Peacebuilding Strategies

Abstract

Peacebuilding strategies are deliberate approaches used to prevent conflict, address the causes of disputes, strengthen peaceful relationships, and promote cooperation within communities. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that can influence how they understand and respond to conflict-related situations. In communities where disagreements, mistrust, social divisions, and other tensions may affect peaceful coexistence, improving adults’ understanding of peacebuilding strategies is important for strengthening constructive participation in community affairs. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of peacebuilding strategies. Adult learning may expose participants to structured learning activities such as group discussions, dialogue sessions, collaborative activities, case studies, role-playing, problem-solving exercises, and community-based learning. Through these activities, adults can examine the causes and consequences of conflict, explore peaceful approaches to disagreement, and develop greater awareness of cooperation and dialogue. Learning experiences that encourage participation and reflection can also help adults connect peacebuilding principles with situations encountered in their families, workplaces, and communities. Effective adult learning can therefore provide practical opportunities for developing knowledge that supports peaceful interaction. Adults’ understanding of peacebuilding strategies refers to their ability to recognize, explain, and distinguish approaches that can contribute to conflict prevention, peaceful conflict management, reconciliation, dialogue, tolerance, cooperation, and community cohesion. Adequate understanding can help adults identify constructive responses to disagreements rather than relying on actions that may intensify tension. Adult learning is expected to strengthen this understanding by providing relevant information, opportunities for discussion, and practical situations through which participants can examine different peacebuilding approaches. The relationship between adult learning and understanding of peacebuilding strategies is therefore important to community development and peaceful social interaction. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and community learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of peacebuilding strategies. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of peacebuilding strategies. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning contributes positively to adults’ understanding of peacebuilding strategies. It is anticipated that adults who engage in relevant learning activities will demonstrate greater awareness of peaceful dialogue, conflict prevention, negotiation, reconciliation, tolerance, cooperation, and other constructive approaches to managing disagreements. The findings may also indicate that participatory learning experiences provide adults with better opportunities to connect peacebuilding knowledge with practical community situations. Such outcomes would demonstrate the educational value of adult learning in strengthening knowledge relevant to peaceful coexistence. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, community development practitioners, facilitators, and organizations involved in peacebuilding activities. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical peacebuilding content into learning activities and use participatory methods that encourage dialogue, reflection, cooperation, and problem-solving. Facilitators may also use community-based examples and realistic conflict situations to make peacebuilding concepts easier for adults to understand and apply. Strengthening these learning experiences can help position adult education as an important avenue for developing informed and constructive community participants. The study is significant because improved understanding of peacebuilding strategies can contribute to more constructive approaches to disagreements and stronger relationships within communities. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide accessible learning opportunities that address peacebuilding concepts and encourage active participation, dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving. Adult educators should also integrate practical examples and activities that enable participants to examine peaceful responses to real-life situations. The study concludes that well-designed adult learning can provide a valuable educational foundation for improving adults’ understanding of peacebuilding strategies and supporting peaceful community interaction.
