Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Community Dispute Settlement
Abstract
Community dispute settlement refers to the processes and approaches used to address disagreements between individuals or groups and reach acceptable solutions that can restore cooperation and peaceful relationships. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, examine practical situations, and develop understanding that can influence how they respond to disagreements within their communities. Since unresolved disputes can affect relationships, cooperation, and community development, improving adults’ understanding of appropriate dispute settlement processes is important. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of community dispute settlement. Adult learning can introduce participants to dispute settlement concepts through group discussions, case studies, role-playing, facilitated dialogue, simulations, storytelling, and problem-solving activities. These learning experiences can expose adults to approaches such as negotiation, mediation, dialogue, compromise, reconciliation, and collaborative problem-solving. Participatory activities can further enable learners to examine different perspectives, identify the sources of disagreements, and consider constructive ways of addressing disputes. Such learning experiences may provide adults with practical opportunities to develop a clearer understanding of how community disputes can be managed peacefully. Adults’ understanding of community dispute settlement refers to their ability to identify, explain, and distinguish the processes used to address disagreements and work toward acceptable resolutions. This understanding may include knowledge of negotiation, mediation, dialogue, compromise, reconciliation, communication, and other constructive approaches to resolving disputes. Adequate understanding can help adults recognize appropriate responses to community disagreements and participate more effectively in settlement efforts. Adult learning is expected to strengthen this understanding by providing relevant knowledge and practical learning experiences that connect dispute settlement principles with community situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and community learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of community dispute settlement. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of community dispute settlement. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of community dispute settlement. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant learning activities will demonstrate improved understanding of negotiation, mediation, dialogue, compromise, reconciliation, and collaborative approaches to resolving disagreements. The findings may also indicate that participatory learning methods help adults connect theoretical knowledge with practical community situations involving disputes. Such outcomes would demonstrate the contribution of adult learning to developing knowledge that supports constructive approaches to community disagreements. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, community development practitioners, peacebuilding facilitators, and organizations involved in community learning programmes. Adult Education programmes can incorporate community dispute settlement concepts into relevant learning activities and use practical methods such as role-playing, case studies, simulations, and guided discussions. Facilitators can also encourage participants to examine realistic dispute situations and explore different approaches to reaching peaceful and acceptable solutions. Strengthening adults’ understanding in this area may improve their preparedness to participate constructively in community dispute settlement activities. The study is significant because improved understanding of community dispute settlement can promote peaceful interaction, cooperation, constructive communication, and stronger community relationships. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide accessible learning opportunities that expose adults to relevant dispute settlement principles and practical approaches. Adult educators should also use participatory activities that encourage dialogue, negotiation, compromise, reconciliation, and collaborative problem-solving. The study concludes that adult learning can provide an important educational foundation for improving adults’ understanding of community dispute settlement and supporting peaceful management of disagreements.
