Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Fabric Cutting Techniques

Abstract

Fabric cutting techniques involve the methods used to measure, mark, position, and cut fabric accurately according to a desired garment design or pattern. Knowledge of fabric cutting is important because accurate cutting contributes to proper garment construction, efficient use of materials, and improved quality of finished clothing. Inadequate knowledge may result in inaccurate measurements, uneven cutting, fabric wastage, and difficulty achieving the intended garment shape. Adult Learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical textile skills through structured, participatory, and hands-on learning activities. This study therefore examines the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of fabric cutting techniques. Adult Learning in this context involves structured learning activities designed to introduce adults to fundamental fabric cutting principles and procedures. Such activities may include demonstrations, discussions, measurement exercises, fabric preparation, pattern placement, marking, and supervised cutting practice. Learners may be exposed to the use of measuring tapes, fabric scissors, rulers, patterns, marking tools, and other basic cutting equipment. Practical activities can help adults understand the relationship between measurements, pattern placement, fabric grain, cutting accuracy, and efficient material utilization. Knowledge of fabric cutting techniques refers to adults’ understanding of measurement, fabric preparation, pattern positioning, marking, cutting methods, tool selection, and basic precautions associated with fabric cutting. Adults with adequate knowledge are better able to measure fabric correctly, position patterns appropriately, make accurate markings, and cut fabric according to required specifications. Adult Learning can strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations with demonstrations, guided practice, and corrective feedback. Such learning experiences may improve adults’ confidence and ability to apply fabric cutting techniques during garment production activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, vocational, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of fabric cutting techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of fabric cutting techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of fabric cutting techniques. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of fabric measurement, pattern placement, marking, cutting procedures, and appropriate use of cutting tools. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated cutting exercises contribute substantially to improved knowledge because learners can observe the correct procedures and apply them under guidance. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, fashion and clothing instructors, vocational trainers, community learning facilitators, and skills-development organisations. Adult Learning programmes involving garment production should provide suitable fabrics, patterns, cutting tools, instructional materials, and opportunities for supervised practice. Practical exposure can help learners connect theoretical knowledge with actual cutting activities while developing accuracy and confidence. Improved knowledge of fabric cutting may also contribute to better material utilization and provide a foundation for further development of garment-making skills. The study will conclude that Adult Learning can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of fabric cutting techniques. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate demonstrations, measurement exercises, pattern-placement activities, marking practice, supervised cutting, and appropriate safety guidance. Adult educators should provide repeated opportunities for learners to practise accurate cutting and receive constructive feedback. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful fabric cutting knowledge for garment production, vocational development, and livelihood-related activities.
