Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Community-Based Tourism Practices

Abstract

Community-based tourism practices involve tourism activities that encourage local participation in the planning, development, management, and utilization of tourism resources while supporting community interests and preserving local culture and environments. Adult Learning can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical understanding of how communities can participate effectively in tourism activities. This study will examine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of community-based tourism practices. The study is important because inadequate knowledge of community-based tourism may limit adults’ participation in tourism development and reduce their ability to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable use of local tourism resources. Adult Learning can expose adults to important community-based tourism practices such as local participation, cultural preservation, environmental responsibility, hospitality, community tourism planning, local enterprise development, visitor engagement, and responsible use of tourism resources. Through discussions, group activities, community exploration, case studies, field experiences, and practical learning exercises, adults can develop knowledge of how tourism activities can be organized to benefit local communities. Such learning can also help adults understand the importance of cooperation among community members and tourism stakeholders. Adults’ knowledge of community-based tourism practices involves their ability to identify, explain, and understand appropriate approaches to community participation in tourism activities. Adequate knowledge can enable adults to recognize opportunities for local involvement, appreciate the value of cultural and natural resources, and understand practices that promote responsible tourism development. Adult Learning can therefore strengthen this knowledge by connecting educational experiences with local tourism situations and encouraging adults to apply acquired knowledge to community-based tourism activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of community-based tourism practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of community-based tourism practices. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Learning contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of community-based tourism practices. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of local participation, cultural preservation, environmental responsibility, tourism planning, hospitality, and community-oriented tourism enterprises. The study may further establish that practical, participatory, and community-based learning activities are useful for developing adults’ knowledge of appropriate tourism practices and encouraging greater awareness of local tourism opportunities. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, tourism development organizations, and programme planners. Adult Learning programmes can incorporate practical community tourism activities that enable adults to examine local tourism resources, discuss community participation, and explore responsible tourism practices. Field activities, group projects, community discussions, case studies, and local tourism development exercises can make learning more practical and encourage adults to connect tourism knowledge with community development needs. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Education practitioners, tourism stakeholders, cultural organizations, and community development planners by providing information on the role of learning in strengthening knowledge of community-based tourism practices. It will recommend greater inclusion of community tourism content in relevant Adult Learning programmes and the use of participatory learning approaches that reflect local tourism realities. The study will conclude that Adult Learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of community-based tourism practices and promoting informed community participation in tourism development.
