Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Use of Public Reading Facilities
Abstract
Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills that can support lifelong learning and effective use of community educational resources. Public reading facilities provide accessible spaces where adults can read, study, access information, and engage in individual or group learning activities. However, limited awareness of available facilities, their benefits, and appropriate patterns of use may reduce adults’ participation in public reading activities. This study will examine the impact of adult education on adults’ use of public reading facilities, with the purpose of determining whether adult education can encourage greater and more purposeful utilization of these facilities. Adult education involves organized learning experiences designed to address the educational, social, and practical needs of adults. In relation to public reading facilities, adult education may involve literacy programmes, reading workshops, information sessions, learning discussions, library-related activities, and awareness programmes. These activities can introduce adults to available reading spaces, operating procedures, available resources, appropriate facility-use practices, and the educational benefits of regular reading. Through practical and participatory learning, adults can develop greater awareness of opportunities for independent learning and information access within their communities. Adults’ use of public reading facilities refers to the extent to which adults access and utilize designated public spaces for reading, studying, information seeking, and other educational activities. Effective use may involve regular visits, appropriate use of available resources, observance of facility guidelines, and participation in reading or learning activities. Adult education can influence this use by increasing adults’ awareness of available facilities and demonstrating how they can support personal development and lifelong learning. Improved knowledge and confidence may encourage adults to make more frequent and purposeful use of public reading facilities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and community learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to adult education and their use of public reading facilities. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ use of public reading facilities. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on adults’ use of public reading facilities. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of available reading facilities and increased willingness to use them for reading, studying, information seeking, and independent learning. The study is also expected to indicate that learning activities that directly introduce adults to available reading resources and facilities can encourage more regular and purposeful utilization. The findings will have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, librarians, community educators, and managers of public reading facilities. Adult education programmes can incorporate awareness activities, guided visits, reading sessions, and practical demonstrations that familiarize adults with available public reading facilities. Educators can also encourage adults to identify reading resources that correspond with their personal, educational, and vocational interests. Such approaches can promote reading habits, independent learning, and continued engagement with community-based educational resources. The study will be significant to adult learners, public reading facilities, community organizations, librarians, Adult Education practitioners, and other stakeholders interested in lifelong learning. It will recommend stronger collaboration between adult education providers and public reading facilities to improve awareness and encourage regular use among adults. The study will conclude that effective adult education can contribute to increased and more purposeful use of public reading facilities, thereby supporting independent learning, information access, and lifelong educational development.
