Abstract
Small-scale irrigation practices involve the controlled application and management of water to support crop production, particularly where rainfall is insufficient or irregular. Knowledge of these practices enables adults to understand appropriate water sources, irrigation methods, water distribution, scheduling, and basic maintenance of irrigation systems. Inadequate knowledge may result in inefficient water use, poor crop growth, unnecessary water losses, and ineffective management of available irrigation resources. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical agricultural knowledge through structured learning, demonstrations, and experience-based activities. This study therefore examines the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of small-scale irrigation practices. Adult Education in this context involves structured learning activities designed to introduce adults to basic principles and procedures associated with small-scale irrigation. Such activities may include demonstrations, discussions, field observations, practical exercises, and guided activities on water application and irrigation management. Learners may be exposed to different small-scale irrigation methods, appropriate irrigation scheduling, basic water distribution practices, and simple procedures for maintaining irrigation equipment. Practical learning can help adults connect agricultural information with actual irrigation situations and develop familiarity with appropriate water-management practices. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of small-scale irrigation practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of small-scale irrigation practices. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of small-scale irrigation practices. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of irrigation methods, water application, irrigation scheduling, water distribution, basic equipment, and routine maintenance practices. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and field-based activities contribute substantially to improved knowledge because learners are able to observe irrigation procedures and relate them to actual agricultural conditions. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, agricultural extension facilitators, community learning providers, and organisations involved in agricultural skills development. Adult Education programmes should provide practical opportunities for learners to observe and practise appropriate irrigation procedures. Demonstrations involving water application, irrigation scheduling, equipment handling, and basic maintenance may strengthen learners’ understanding and encourage efficient use of available water resources. Improved irrigation knowledge may also support household food production, small-scale farming activities, and more effective agricultural practices. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of small-scale irrigation practices. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, field observations, irrigation-method identification, water-management exercises, and supervised activities. Adult educators and agricultural facilitators should provide learners with opportunities to practise appropriate irrigation procedures and understand basic maintenance requirements. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful irrigation knowledge for agricultural production, resource management, and livelihood development.
