Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Heritage Tourism

Abstract

Adult Education provides adults with knowledge and skills that can support cultural awareness, community participation, and appreciation of local resources. Heritage tourism involves travel and tourism activities centred on places, traditions, cultural expressions, historical events, monuments, artefacts, and other resources that represent the heritage of a community or society. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of heritage tourism. The study will focus on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of heritage tourism resources, their cultural significance, and their potential contribution to community development. Adult Education can expose learners to information about historical sites, cultural landscapes, traditional practices, festivals, monuments, museums, artefacts, and other forms of heritage resources. Through discussions, presentations, field-based activities, community projects, and practical examples, adults can develop greater awareness of the different resources that may attract visitors and contribute to cultural tourism. Such learning experiences may also help adults understand the importance of preserving heritage resources and presenting them responsibly to visitors. Adults’ knowledge of heritage tourism involves their understanding of heritage resources, their historical and cultural significance, tourism opportunities associated with them, and the importance of their preservation. Adequate knowledge can enable adults to recognize valuable heritage assets within their communities and appreciate their potential for education, cultural exchange, and local economic activity. Adult Education may strengthen this knowledge by connecting cultural learning with practical information about tourism development, heritage preservation, visitor engagement, and responsible use of cultural resources. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of heritage tourism. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of heritage tourism. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of heritage tourism. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved understanding of heritage resources, their cultural significance, tourism potential, and the importance of preservation. The study may further establish that practical learning experiences can help adults identify heritage resources within their communities and develop greater appreciation for their role in cultural and community development. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, cultural organisations, tourism stakeholders, and heritage-management institutions. Incorporating heritage tourism education into adult learning programmes may provide adults with useful knowledge for identifying, preserving, promoting, and responsibly presenting local heritage resources. Practical activities such as community heritage mapping, site visits, cultural documentation, and discussions with local knowledge holders may further strengthen adults’ understanding of heritage tourism. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Education practitioners, cultural organisations, tourism stakeholders, and other stakeholders interested in heritage preservation and tourism development. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should incorporate relevant heritage tourism activities that expose adults to local historical and cultural resources and their tourism significance. The study concludes that Adult Education can serve as an important avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of heritage tourism and strengthening appreciation, preservation, and responsible use of cultural heritage resources.
