Effect of Fisheries Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Fish Feed Types

Abstract

Fish feed is an essential component of aquaculture because appropriate feeding contributes to fish growth, health, development, and overall production performance. Fisheries education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge about different types of fish feed and their appropriate uses in fish production. However, some adults involved in fisheries and aquaculture activities may have limited knowledge of available fish feed types due to inadequate exposure to structured learning opportunities. This study will examine the effect of fisheries education on adults’ knowledge of fish feed types. Fisheries education may expose adults to different categories of fish feed, including natural feed, supplementary feed, complete feed, floating feed, sinking feed, and other formulated feeds used in aquaculture. Learning activities may involve demonstrations, feed identification exercises, discussions, practical comparisons, and activities on the characteristics and uses of different feeds. Through these experiences, adults can develop greater familiarity with feed types and understand their relevance to different stages and conditions of fish production. Adults’ knowledge of fish feed types refers to their ability to identify, classify, describe, and explain the characteristics and uses of different feeds provided to cultured fish. This may include knowledge of feed forms, nutritional characteristics, suitability for different fish sizes, feeding conditions, and appropriate applications. Fisheries education may improve this knowledge by providing adults with opportunities to examine different feed types and relate their characteristics to practical aquaculture activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected fisheries, aquaculture, agricultural, or vocational education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a fish feed knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of different feed types, characteristics, and uses. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of fisheries education on adults’ knowledge of fish feed types. The study is expected to establish that participation in fisheries education may improve adults’ knowledge of fish feed types. Adults exposed to structured fisheries learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of feed identification, classification, characteristics, forms, and appropriate uses. The findings may also indicate that practical feed identification and comparison activities are useful for helping adults distinguish different types of fish feed and understand their relevance to fish production. The study will conclude that fisheries education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of fish feed types. It will recommend that fisheries education programmes incorporate practical feed identification, demonstrations, comparative exercises, and opportunities for repeated learning. Improving adults’ knowledge of fish feed types may contribute to better feeding decisions, improved aquaculture management, practical competence, fish production, and income-generating opportunities.
