Effect of Agricultural Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Vegetable Seedling Production
Abstract
Vegetable seedling production involves the processes of selecting quality seeds, preparing suitable growing media, sowing seeds, providing appropriate moisture, managing seedlings, and preparing healthy plants for transplanting. Adequate knowledge of seedling production enables adults to understand the conditions and practices required for producing strong and healthy vegetable seedlings. However, inadequate knowledge may result in poor germination, weak seedlings, seed wastage, and low-quality planting materials. Agricultural Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical agricultural knowledge through structured instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. This study therefore examines the effect of Agricultural Education on adults’ knowledge of vegetable seedling production. Agricultural Education in this context involves structured learning activities designed to introduce adults to the principles and procedures of vegetable seedling production. Such activities may include demonstrations, discussions, seed identification, preparation of nursery beds or containers, selection of growing media, sowing techniques, watering, shading, thinning, and basic seedling care. Learners may also be exposed to appropriate nursery tools and materials and their uses. Practical learning activities can help adults understand the sequence of seedling production activities and develop familiarity with practices that promote healthy vegetable seedlings. Knowledge of vegetable seedling production refers to adults’ understanding of seed selection, growing-media preparation, sowing methods, moisture management, nursery care, seedling protection, and preparation for transplanting. Adults with adequate knowledge are better positioned to identify suitable seeds, establish appropriate nursery conditions, and apply proper practices throughout the seedling-development process. Agricultural Education can strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations with demonstrations, field observations, guided practice, and practical nursery activities. Such learning experiences may improve adults’ confidence and ability to apply seedling production knowledge to vegetable farming activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected agricultural, Adult Education, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of vegetable seedling production. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Agricultural Education on adults’ knowledge of vegetable seedling production. The study is expected to establish that Agricultural Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of vegetable seedling production. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of seed selection, nursery preparation, sowing, watering, shading, seedling care, and transplanting preparation. The study may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised nursery activities contribute significantly to improved knowledge because learners can observe seedling production procedures and apply them under guidance. The findings are expected to have implications for agricultural educators, extension facilitators, adult learning providers, community agricultural trainers, and organisations involved in agricultural skills development. Agricultural Education programmes should provide practical opportunities for adults to participate in seedling production activities. Demonstrations involving nursery preparation, seed selection, sowing, watering, and seedling management can help learners connect agricultural information with actual production practices. Improved knowledge may support household vegetable production, small-scale farming, and more effective use of available agricultural resources. The study will conclude that Agricultural Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of vegetable seedling production. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, seed-identification activities, nursery preparation, sowing exercises, seedling-care practice, and supervised transplanting preparation. Agricultural educators should provide repeated opportunities for learners to practise seedling production procedures and receive constructive feedback. The study will contribute to the development of practical agricultural education programmes that equip adults with useful knowledge for vegetable production, food security, and livelihood development.
