Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Deaf Culture

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can promote social inclusion, respect for diversity, and effective participation in community life. Deaf culture refers to the shared social, linguistic, cultural, and community experiences associated with Deaf people, particularly those who identify with sign language and Deaf communities. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of Deaf culture. The study will focus on how adult learning experiences can improve adults’ knowledge of Deaf identity, communication practices, social experiences, and cultural perspectives. Adult learning can introduce adults to important aspects of Deaf culture through discussions, presentations, interactive activities, personal experiences, and exposure to Deaf-related learning materials. Such learning may address the role of sign language, Deaf community life, cultural identity, communication preferences, and common misconceptions about Deaf people. By providing accurate and respectful information, adult learning programmes may help learners develop a broader understanding of Deaf culture and appreciate the diversity of communication and social experiences within Deaf communities. Adults’ understanding of Deaf culture involves their knowledge of the cultural identity, communication practices, social values, community experiences, and perspectives associated with Deaf people. It also includes awareness that Deafness is not simply a communication difficulty but may involve a distinct cultural and linguistic identity for people who identify with Deaf communities. Adult learning may strengthen this understanding by providing opportunities to examine cultural perspectives, challenge misconceptions, and develop greater appreciation for Deaf people's experiences and forms of communication. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of Deaf culture. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ understanding of Deaf culture. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of Deaf culture. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities may demonstrate improved knowledge of Deaf identity, sign language, cultural practices, community experiences, and appropriate ways of interacting with Deaf people. The study may further establish that exposure to accurate information and practical learning experiences can reduce misconceptions and strengthen adults’ appreciation of Deaf culture. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, disability-support organisations, and inclusion advocates. Incorporating Deaf culture into adult learning programmes may provide adults with useful knowledge for developing respectful and culturally appropriate interactions with Deaf people. Discussions, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to engage with Deaf-related experiences may also help learners understand the importance of recognizing linguistic and cultural diversity. The study will be significant to adult learners, Deaf people, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, disability-support groups, and other stakeholders interested in promoting social inclusion. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should include appropriate learning activities on Deaf culture, sign language, Deaf identity, and the experiences of Deaf communities. The study concludes that adult learning can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ understanding of Deaf culture and promoting greater respect, inclusion, and meaningful participation of Deaf people in community life.
