Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Local Historical Sites
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can strengthen their understanding of their immediate environment and cultural heritage. One important area is knowledge of local historical sites, which enables adults to recognize places associated with significant events, people, traditions, and community development. Despite the historical value of many local sites, some adults may have limited knowledge of their locations, historical significance, preservation needs, and cultural importance. This study therefore examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of local historical sites, with the aim of determining whether participation in structured learning activities can improve adults’ awareness and understanding of historical places within their communities. Adult learning can expose participants to historical information through discussions, community-based learning activities, guided visits, storytelling, photographs, documentaries, oral history, and locally relevant educational materials. These approaches can help adults connect historical information with places and events that are part of their community experience. Through active participation and interaction with local historical resources, learners can develop a clearer understanding of the origins, functions, historical events, and cultural meanings associated with important sites. Adult learning can therefore serve as a practical means of strengthening knowledge of local heritage. Knowledge of local historical sites involves the ability to identify significant sites, recognize their locations, understand their historical background, and explain their cultural or community significance. Adults with adequate knowledge of such sites may be better positioned to appreciate local history and recognize the importance of preserving historical resources for future generations. Adult learning can enhance this knowledge by providing opportunities for learners to investigate historical information, interact with community members, examine heritage materials, and participate in activities that make local history more meaningful and accessible. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of local historical sites. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of local historical sites. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning activities contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of local historical sites. It is expected that adults who receive structured learning opportunities involving local history will demonstrate improved ability to identify historical sites, describe their significance, recognize important historical events associated with them, and understand their relevance to community identity. The findings may also indicate that practical and community-based learning approaches provide stronger opportunities for adults to develop meaningful knowledge of local historical resources. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, heritage organizations, and facilitators of community learning programmes. Incorporating local historical materials, community visits, oral history activities, heritage discussions, and practical documentation exercises into adult learning programmes may make learning more relevant and engaging. Such activities can also encourage adults to interact with older community members and other knowledge holders, thereby supporting the transmission of historical knowledge across generations. The study will be significant to adults, community leaders, Adult Education practitioners, heritage organizations, researchers, and policymakers interested in strengthening local historical awareness and heritage appreciation. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes incorporate locally relevant historical content and practical activities that enable adults to explore historical sites within their communities. The study concludes that appropriately designed adult learning opportunities can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of local historical sites and strengthening community appreciation of local heritage.
