Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Hair Styling Techniques

Abstract

Hair styling techniques are important practical skills used to improve the appearance, arrangement, and presentation of hair. Adult learning provides opportunities for individuals to acquire practical knowledge and develop competencies that can support personal grooming, vocational development, and income-generating activities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate hair styling techniques due to inadequate exposure to structured practical learning. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of hair styling techniques. Adult learning activities in hair styling may expose learners to different methods of preparing, arranging, shaping, and finishing hair. These activities may include demonstrations and practical exercises involving hair sectioning, combing, braiding, twisting, curling, setting, and basic styling procedures. Through guided practice, demonstrations, and repeated practical activities, adults can develop familiarity with the sequence, tools, and techniques required for different hair styling tasks. Adults’ knowledge of hair styling techniques refers to their ability to identify, describe, and explain the basic procedures involved in styling hair. It may include knowledge of appropriate preparation methods, sectioning techniques, styling tools, product application, hair arrangement, finishing procedures, and basic care considerations. Effective adult learning may improve this knowledge by providing learners with opportunities to observe styling processes and apply techniques during practical activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning, vocational, or hairdressing programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a hair styling techniques knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant styling procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of hair styling techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning may improve adults’ knowledge of hair styling techniques. Adults exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of hair preparation, sectioning, braiding, twisting, curling, setting, arrangement, and finishing procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on activities are useful in helping adults understand and apply different hair styling techniques. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for developing adults’ knowledge of hair styling techniques. It will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, appropriate hairdressing tools, guided exercises, and sufficient opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ knowledge of hair styling techniques may support practical competence, personal grooming, vocational development, entrepreneurship, and income-generating opportunities.
