Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Development Programmes

Abstract

Community development programmes are organized activities designed to improve social, economic, educational, environmental, and infrastructural conditions within communities. Adults need adequate knowledge of these programmes to understand their objectives, identify available opportunities, recognize their responsibilities, and participate meaningfully in community development activities. However, limited knowledge of community development programmes may reduce adults’ awareness of available initiatives and restrict their involvement in activities intended to address community needs. This study will examine the effect of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of community development programmes. Adult Learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge through experience, interaction, practical activities, group discussions, community-based projects, and other learning approaches relevant to their everyday lives. Through appropriate learning experiences, adults can become more familiar with the purpose, structure, objectives, and activities of community development programmes. Adult Learning can also encourage participants to examine community needs, understand development initiatives, identify available programmes, and recognize ways through which community members can contribute to development activities. Knowledge of community development programmes refers to adults’ understanding of the purpose, objectives, activities, implementation processes, participation opportunities, and expected outcomes associated with development initiatives within their communities. Such knowledge enables adults to identify relevant programmes, understand their potential benefits, and recognize appropriate avenues for participation or support. Adult Learning can strengthen this knowledge by connecting educational activities with actual community situations and providing opportunities for adults to discuss and examine development-related issues. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of community development programmes. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Learning on adults’ knowledge of community development programmes. The study is expected to establish that Adult Learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of community development programmes. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of the objectives, activities, benefits, implementation processes, and participation opportunities associated with community development initiatives. The study is also expected to indicate that practical and community-oriented learning experiences can make development information more accessible and meaningful to adult learners. The findings will have implications for Adult Learning practitioners, community development facilitators, programme planners, and community-based organizations. Adult Learning programmes should incorporate practical activities that expose adults to relevant community development initiatives and encourage them to examine local development needs. Group discussions, community projects, case studies, and practical information sessions may help learners develop a clearer understanding of development programmes and the different ways community members can participate in them. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Learning practitioners, community development organizations, and other stakeholders involved in local development activities. It is expected to demonstrate the importance of Adult Learning in improving adults’ knowledge of programmes designed to address community needs and promote collective development. The study will recommend greater integration of community development information into relevant Adult Learning programmes and the use of practical learning approaches to strengthen adults’ knowledge and participation. It will conclude that effective Adult Learning can contribute to improved knowledge of community development programmes and support more informed community involvement.
