Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Fire Extinguisher Use

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their ability to respond appropriately to everyday safety situations. Basic fire extinguisher use is an important safety skill because early and appropriate action can help control a small fire before it develops into a more serious emergency. However, inadequate knowledge of extinguisher types, operating procedures, safety precautions, and appropriate situations for their use may lead to ineffective or unsafe responses. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic fire extinguisher use, with the purpose of determining whether participation in relevant learning activities can improve adults’ understanding of safe and appropriate extinguisher use. Adult learning involves purposeful educational activities through which adults acquire new knowledge, practical skills, and competencies based on their experiences and immediate needs. In relation to fire safety, adult learning may include demonstrations, practical instruction, group discussions, visual presentations, safety workshops, and supervised practice. These approaches can introduce adults to different types of fire extinguishers, their basic functions, operating instructions, safety precautions, and appropriate response procedures. Practical and experience-based learning can make safety information easier to understand and remember, particularly when learners are given opportunities to observe and practise appropriate procedures. Adults’ knowledge of basic fire extinguisher use refers to their understanding of the conditions under which an extinguisher may appropriately be used, the basic steps involved in operating one, and the precautions that should be observed before attempting to control a fire. It also includes knowledge of identifying suitable extinguishers for different fire situations, maintaining a safe position, following operating instructions, and recognizing when evacuation and professional emergency assistance are necessary instead. Adult learning can strengthen this knowledge by presenting safety information in clear, practical, and participatory ways that allow learners to connect new information with real-life situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning and community safety programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of basic fire extinguisher use. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic fire extinguisher use. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of basic fire extinguisher use. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of extinguisher identification, basic operating procedures, safety precautions, and the circumstances in which attempting to use an extinguisher may or may not be appropriate. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and opportunities for guided learning can strengthen adults’ ability to recall and explain basic fire safety procedures. The findings will have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, community safety educators, workplace safety trainers, and organizations involved in emergency preparedness. Adult learning programmes can incorporate practical fire-safety sessions, demonstrations, visual materials, and supervised activities to improve participants’ understanding of basic extinguisher use. Educators can also emphasize the importance of personal safety, early warning, evacuation, and contacting emergency services rather than encouraging adults to take unnecessary risks. Such approaches can make fire-safety education more practical, understandable, and relevant to adults’ everyday environments. The study will be significant to adults, families, community organizations, workplaces, safety educators, and emergency preparedness stakeholders by providing useful information on the role of adult learning in developing basic fire-safety knowledge. It will recommend the inclusion of appropriate fire-safety education and practical demonstrations in relevant adult learning programmes, alongside clear guidance on when evacuation should take priority over firefighting. The study will conclude that effective adult learning can contribute to improved knowledge of basic fire extinguisher use and strengthen adults’ preparedness to respond appropriately to small fire emergencies.
