Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Archaeological Heritage

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can strengthen cultural awareness, heritage appreciation, and participation in the preservation of historical resources. Archaeological heritage refers to physical remains, sites, artefacts, structures, and other material evidence of past human activities that provide information about earlier societies and cultures. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of archaeological heritage. The study will focus on how learning experiences can improve adults’ understanding of archaeological resources, their historical significance, and the importance of protecting them. Adult learning can expose adults to information about archaeological sites, artefacts, excavation findings, ancient settlements, monuments, and other forms of material heritage. Through discussions, visual materials, exhibitions, site-based activities, demonstrations, and community learning projects, adults can develop greater awareness of how archaeological resources provide evidence about past human societies. Such learning experiences may also help adults understand the importance of protecting archaeological resources from damage, neglect, unauthorized removal, and inappropriate use. Adults’ knowledge of archaeological heritage involves their understanding of archaeological resources, their historical and cultural significance, and the role they play in documenting human history. Adequate knowledge can enable adults to recognize archaeological sites and materials as valuable sources of information about past societies and appreciate the need for their protection. Adult learning may strengthen this knowledge by providing accessible explanations and practical opportunities for adults to examine archaeological resources, understand their significance, and develop greater awareness of heritage preservation responsibilities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of archaeological heritage. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of archaeological heritage. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of archaeological heritage. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities may demonstrate improved understanding of archaeological sites, artefacts, historical evidence, and the cultural significance of archaeological resources. The study may further establish that practical exposure to archaeological materials and heritage information can increase adults’ appreciation of the need to protect archaeological resources and discourage activities that may result in their loss or deterioration. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, archaeologists, museums, heritage organisations, and cultural institutions. Incorporating archaeological heritage education into adult learning programmes may provide adults with practical knowledge for recognizing, appreciating, and protecting archaeological resources within their communities. Activities such as heritage exhibitions, archaeological demonstrations, community documentation, and educational visits may also provide opportunities for adults to connect historical knowledge with local heritage preservation. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, heritage organisations, museums, cultural institutions, community leaders, and other stakeholders interested in protecting archaeological resources. It is recommended that adult learning programmes should incorporate appropriate activities that introduce adults to archaeological heritage and its historical and cultural significance. The study concludes that adult learning can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of archaeological heritage and strengthening community awareness of the importance of protecting material evidence of the past.
