Effect of Adult Education on Fishers’ Knowledge of Aquaculture Equipment

Abstract

Aquaculture equipment plays an important role in fish production because appropriate equipment supports activities such as feeding, water management, fish handling, harvesting, and pond maintenance. Adult education provides opportunities for fishers and other adults involved in fisheries activities to acquire practical knowledge about equipment used in aquaculture. However, some fishers may have limited knowledge of aquaculture equipment due to inadequate exposure to structured learning opportunities. This study will examine the effect of adult education on fishers’ knowledge of aquaculture equipment. Adult education may expose fishers to different aquaculture equipment, including feeding equipment, water-quality testing devices, aeration equipment, fish nets, tanks, pumps, harvesting equipment, and other tools used in fish production. Learning activities may involve equipment identification, demonstrations, discussions, guided practice, and practical exercises on equipment operation and care. Through these activities, fishers can develop greater familiarity with the functions, appropriate uses, and basic maintenance of equipment used in aquaculture. Fishers’ knowledge of aquaculture equipment refers to their ability to identify, describe, classify, and explain the functions and appropriate uses of equipment used in fish production. This may include knowledge of equipment for feeding, aeration, water management, fish handling, harvesting, and routine maintenance. Effective adult education may improve this knowledge by providing practical opportunities for fishers to observe, handle, and apply different aquaculture equipment under appropriate guidance. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise fishers participating in selected fisheries, aquaculture, or adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an aquaculture equipment knowledge assessment designed to measure fishers’ knowledge of relevant equipment, their functions, and appropriate uses. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on fishers’ knowledge of aquaculture equipment. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education may improve fishers’ knowledge of aquaculture equipment. Fishers exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of equipment identification, functions, appropriate uses, handling, operation, and basic maintenance. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and hands-on activities are useful for helping fishers understand the application of different equipment in fish production. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving fishers’ knowledge of aquaculture equipment. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical equipment demonstrations, guided identification exercises, appropriate learning resources, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improving fishers’ knowledge of aquaculture equipment may contribute to better equipment use, efficient fish production, practical competence, improved aquaculture management, and income-generating opportunities.
