Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Sustainable Consumption

Abstract

Sustainable consumption refers to the responsible use of goods and services in ways that meet present needs while reducing unnecessary resource use, waste generation, and environmental harm. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and develop awareness that can influence how they understand and approach consumption decisions. As increasing consumption places pressure on natural resources and contributes to waste and environmental challenges, adults need adequate knowledge to understand more responsible consumption practices. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of sustainable consumption. Adult Education can expose learners to concepts such as responsible purchasing, resource conservation, waste prevention, product durability, reuse, repair, recycling, and efficient use of household resources. Through structured learning activities, adults can examine how everyday consumption choices affect resources, the environment, and household well-being. Such educational experiences can help learners understand the relationship between individual consumption patterns and broader sustainability objectives. Adults’ understanding of sustainable consumption involves their ability to explain the principles, importance, and practical approaches associated with responsible consumption. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to distinguish sustainable consumption practices from patterns that involve excessive resource use, unnecessary disposal, and waste. Improved understanding can also help adults recognize the importance of considering product durability, resource efficiency, reuse, repair, and responsible disposal when making everyday consumption decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of sustainable consumption. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of sustainable consumption. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of sustainable consumption. It is anticipated that adults who participate in relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved knowledge of responsible consumption, resource conservation, waste prevention, reuse, repair, and recycling. The study may also reveal that practical learning experiences strengthen adults’ ability to connect sustainability principles with everyday purchasing, usage, and disposal decisions. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Integrating sustainable consumption concepts into adult learning programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine everyday consumption practices, compare responsible and wasteful patterns, and discuss practical approaches to conserving resources. Such activities may strengthen adults’ ability to apply sustainability knowledge to household and community consumption practices. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, communities, Adult Education practitioners, businesses, environmental organisations, and policymakers interested in promoting responsible resource use. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate practical learning activities on sustainable consumption, resource conservation, responsible purchasing, product durability, reuse, repair, recycling, and waste prevention. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of sustainable consumption and contribute to more responsible approaches to the use of goods, services, and natural resources.
