Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Social Innovation

Abstract

Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to equip adults with relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, social, economic, and community development. Social innovation refers to the development and application of new ideas, approaches, or practices aimed at addressing social needs and improving existing conditions. Adults’ understanding of social innovation is important because it can help them recognize innovative approaches to community challenges and appreciate how individuals and groups can contribute to positive social change. However, limited awareness of social innovation may restrict adults’ ability to recognize its relevance to everyday community development. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of social innovation. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge through discussions, practical activities, group learning, community-based experiences, and exposure to contemporary social issues. Through these learning experiences, adults can be introduced to the meaning, principles, characteristics, and importance of social innovation. Adult Education can also expose learners to examples of innovative responses to social needs, helping them understand how new ideas can be developed, adapted, and applied to improve existing practices and address community concerns. Adults’ understanding of social innovation involves their ability to explain its meaning, identify its major characteristics, recognize its purposes, and distinguish innovative social approaches from routine practices. It also includes an appreciation of the role of creativity, collaboration, community participation, and practical problem-solving in developing responses to social challenges. Adult Education may strengthen this understanding by connecting learning with adults’ existing experiences and encouraging them to examine how innovative ideas can contribute to improvements in their communities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of social innovation. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of social innovation. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of social innovation. Adults who participate in relevant educational programmes are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the meaning, characteristics, processes, and importance of social innovation. The study is also expected to show that exposure to practical discussions and learning activities can strengthen adults’ ability to recognize innovative approaches to social challenges and understand their potential contribution to community improvement. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, community educators, and other stakeholders involved in adult learning. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating social innovation into relevant learning activities and community-based programmes. Discussions, case examples, collaborative exercises, and practical problem-identification activities can provide adults with opportunities to understand how innovative ideas emerge and how they can be applied to address social needs. The study is expected to contribute to the understanding of the role of Adult Education in promoting awareness of contemporary approaches to social development. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide adults with appropriate learning opportunities on social innovation, creativity, community participation, and practical problem-solving. Such learning should connect theoretical knowledge with real-life community situations and encourage adults to recognize their potential role in supporting positive social change. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can strengthen adults’ understanding of social innovation and improve their awareness of innovative approaches to addressing social challenges.
