Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Livestock Breed Selection

Abstract

Livestock breed selection is an important aspect of animal production because choosing suitable breeds can influence productivity, adaptability, reproductive performance, growth, and the overall efficiency of livestock enterprises. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire relevant agricultural knowledge that can support informed decision-making in livestock production. However, some adults may have limited understanding of the factors involved in selecting appropriate livestock breeds due to inadequate access to structured learning. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of livestock breed selection. Adult education on livestock breed selection may expose learners to different livestock breeds and the characteristics used to distinguish and select them. Learning activities may include breed identification, discussions on breed characteristics, demonstrations, comparisons of productive traits, and practical exercises involving breed selection criteria. Through these activities, adults can develop greater awareness of factors such as breed adaptability, growth rate, reproductive characteristics, productivity, environmental suitability, and management requirements. Adults’ understanding of livestock breed selection refers to their ability to explain and apply basic principles involved in choosing suitable livestock breeds for specific production purposes. This may include understanding breed characteristics, production objectives, environmental conditions, animal health considerations, management requirements, and desirable productive traits. Effective adult education may improve this understanding by providing practical learning experiences that enable adults to compare breed characteristics and make informed selection decisions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected agricultural, livestock, or adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a livestock breed selection understanding assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of breed characteristics and selection criteria. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of livestock breed selection. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education may improve adults’ understanding of livestock breed selection. Adults exposed to structured agricultural learning are expected to demonstrate better understanding of breed characteristics, production objectives, adaptability, reproductive traits, growth potential, and management requirements. The findings may also indicate that practical breed identification, comparison, and selection exercises are useful for helping adults develop the knowledge required to make appropriate livestock breed choices. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ understanding of livestock breed selection. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical breed identification activities, demonstrations, comparative learning exercises, and opportunities for learners to apply breed selection criteria. Improving adults’ understanding of livestock breed selection may contribute to better livestock management decisions, increased production efficiency, improved agricultural competence, and sustainable income-generating opportunities.
