Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Green-Jobs Opportunities

Abstract

Adult Education can play an important role in helping adults understand emerging employment opportunities associated with environmental sustainability and changing economic activities. Green jobs provide work opportunities that contribute to preserving or restoring the environment while supporting sustainable production and service delivery. However, some adults may have limited awareness of the nature, categories, requirements, and potential benefits of green-jobs opportunities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of green-jobs opportunities and determine whether educational exposure can improve their awareness of emerging employment pathways within environmentally sustainable activities. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about green employment, sustainable industries, environmental practices, and occupational activities that support environmental protection and resource efficiency. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can be introduced to green-jobs opportunities in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, waste management, recycling, environmental conservation, sustainable construction, and resource management. Education can also help learners understand the skills, responsibilities, and general requirements associated with different green occupations and develop awareness of changing employment patterns. Adults’ understanding of green-jobs opportunities refers to their ability to explain the concept of green jobs, identify different opportunities, recognize their major characteristics, and understand the skills and requirements associated with sustainable occupations. Adequate understanding can enable adults to recognize employment possibilities linked to environmental sustainability and make informed decisions concerning career exploration and skills development. Adult Education can strengthen this understanding through career-oriented discussions, practical activities, occupational information, environmental projects, and opportunities to examine emerging sustainable employment pathways. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of green-jobs opportunities. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of green-jobs opportunities. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ understanding of green-jobs opportunities. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater awareness of green employment, sustainable occupational areas, relevant skills, workplace responsibilities, and available career pathways. The study may further establish that educational exposure helps adults recognize the relationship between environmental sustainability and employment and encourages them to consider emerging opportunities within the green economy. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, career facilitators, and skills-training providers. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical activities that expose adults to green employment opportunities and the skills required to participate in sustainable occupations. Facilitators can use environmental projects, occupational case studies, career exploration exercises, and discussions of emerging green industries to improve learners’ understanding. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to environmental challenges and changing employment opportunities. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, employers, skills-training organisations, career development practitioners, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of education to adults’ understanding of green-jobs opportunities. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide structured learning opportunities covering green employment, sustainable occupations, environmental skills, emerging industries, and career pathways. The study concludes that Adult Education can improve adults’ understanding of green-jobs opportunities and support more informed decisions concerning sustainable employment and skills development.
