Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Basic Ergonomic Practices

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with relevant knowledge, skills, and information that can support safe and effective participation in work and everyday activities. Basic ergonomic practices refer to simple principles for arranging workspaces, positioning the body, using equipment appropriately, and organizing tasks in ways that promote comfort and reduce unnecessary physical strain. Limited understanding of ergonomic practices may contribute to unsuitable work habits and poor workstation arrangements. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of basic ergonomic practices. Adult education on ergonomics can introduce adults to fundamental principles of safe and comfortable work practices. Learning activities may cover appropriate sitting and standing positions, suitable placement of frequently used equipment, workspace organization, adjustment of work surfaces, and appropriate positioning of screens and tools. Through demonstrations, illustrations, discussions, practical exercises, and workplace scenarios, learners can observe and examine how simple ergonomic practices can be incorporated into different work environments. Such educational approaches can make ergonomic concepts easier for adults to understand and apply. Adults’ understanding of basic ergonomic practices involves their ability to identify appropriate workstation arrangements, recognize suitable working positions, and explain simple practices that promote safer and more comfortable work. Adult education can strengthen this understanding by providing structured information and practical opportunities to examine ergonomic principles in realistic situations. Improved knowledge may enable adults to recognize unsuitable practices and understand appropriate alternatives. Education can therefore contribute to greater awareness of how everyday work habits and workspace arrangements can influence comfort and safety. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ understanding of basic ergonomic practices. The population will consist of selected adult learners or workers, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured ergonomic knowledge assessment administered before and after exposure to the educational programme. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ understanding. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to structured ergonomic education demonstrate improved understanding of basic ergonomic practices compared with their level of knowledge before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show greater ability to identify appropriate work positions, workstation arrangements, equipment placement, and workspace organization practices. The findings may indicate that adult education can strengthen adults’ knowledge of basic ergonomic principles and their relevance to everyday work environments. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use practical demonstrations, illustrations, workstation examples, case studies, and guided activities to make ergonomic concepts more understandable and relevant. Learners can be encouraged to examine different work environments and identify appropriate and inappropriate ergonomic practices. Practical learning activities may also help adults connect theoretical knowledge with the work situations they encounter regularly. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, workers, adult educators, employers, workplace organizations, and institutions providing occupational health and continuing education programmes. Adults may gain better knowledge of basic ergonomic principles, while educators may obtain useful information for developing practical workplace-health learning activities. Employers and organizations may also benefit from workers who possess greater awareness of appropriate workstation arrangements and everyday ergonomic practices. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate basic ergonomic education through demonstrations, illustrations, practical exercises, workplace scenarios, and guided discussions. Adult educators should emphasize appropriate working positions, workstation organization, equipment placement, and other simple ergonomic practices that adults can understand and apply. Learners should also be given opportunities to identify ergonomic practices in realistic work situations. The study concludes that adult education has the potential to improve adults’ understanding of basic ergonomic practices and promote greater awareness of safe and comfortable work environments.
