Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Workplace Communication Procedures
Abstract
Workplace communication procedures are essential for ensuring that information, instructions, concerns, and feedback are conveyed through appropriate channels and in a clear, timely, and professional manner. Adults who participate in workplace activities are expected to understand established communication procedures relating to reporting, information sharing, escalation of concerns, official correspondence, and interaction with colleagues and supervisors. However, inadequate knowledge of these procedures may result in communication gaps, misunderstandings, delayed responses, and inappropriate handling of workplace information. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of workplace communication procedures. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and competencies that can improve their participation in workplace activities. Through structured learning activities, discussions, demonstrations, case-based exercises, and practical workplace-related examples, adults can develop a better understanding of appropriate communication channels and procedures. Adult Education can also expose learners to professional communication practices, organizational protocols, reporting structures, information-sharing processes, and appropriate methods for communicating workplace concerns. Knowledge of workplace communication procedures refers to adults’ understanding of the appropriate channels, protocols, responsibilities, and practices involved in communicating within an organization. This knowledge enables individuals to determine whom to contact, how information should be communicated, when issues should be escalated, and how workplace messages should be documented or reported. Effective Adult Education may strengthen this knowledge by connecting learning experiences with practical workplace situations and enabling adults to apply communication principles to realistic organizational contexts. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of workplace communication procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of workplace communication procedures. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education is associated with improved knowledge of workplace communication procedures. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate better understanding of appropriate communication channels, reporting procedures, organizational communication protocols, information-sharing practices, and escalation processes. The study is also expected to show that practical and workplace-oriented learning experiences can make communication procedures easier for adults to understand and apply in organizational settings. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, workplace trainers, programme developers, and organizations that provide continuing education opportunities for adults. Adult Education programmes should incorporate practical workplace communication activities that allow learners to examine communication scenarios, identify appropriate channels, practise reporting procedures, and understand organizational communication structures. Such activities can strengthen learners’ confidence and improve their ability to communicate appropriately when dealing with workplace information, instructions, concerns, and professional interactions. The study will be significant to adult learners, employees, employers, Adult Education practitioners, and organizations seeking to improve workplace communication. It is expected to demonstrate the value of Adult Education in developing practical knowledge that supports effective workplace participation. The study will recommend greater inclusion of workplace communication procedures in relevant Adult Education programmes and the use of practical learning approaches to strengthen adults’ understanding of organizational communication. It will conclude that relevant Adult Education can contribute to improved knowledge of workplace communication procedures and support more effective communication practices among adults.
