Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Urban Housing Challenges

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can improve their understanding of social, economic, environmental, and community issues affecting everyday life. Urban housing challenges refer to difficulties associated with the availability, affordability, quality, accessibility, adequacy, and management of housing within urban areas. These challenges may include housing shortages, overcrowding, high housing costs, inadequate infrastructure, poor housing conditions, and unequal access to suitable accommodation. Adults’ knowledge of urban housing challenges is important because informed residents can better understand factors affecting housing conditions and participate meaningfully in discussions concerning urban development. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of urban housing challenges, with the purpose of determining whether adult education can improve their understanding of major housing issues in urban communities. Adult education can expose learners to urban housing concepts through discussions, case studies, visual materials, community observations, practical activities, and experience-based learning. Learning activities may introduce adults to different dimensions of urban housing, including housing supply, affordability, overcrowding, infrastructure provision, land availability, housing quality, accessibility, and urban growth. Participants may also examine how population changes, economic conditions, planning practices, infrastructure limitations, and development patterns can influence housing conditions. By connecting these concepts with familiar community experiences, adult education can make urban housing issues easier for adults to understand and discuss. Adults’ knowledge of urban housing challenges refers to their ability to identify major housing problems, explain their causes and consequences, recognize factors that influence housing conditions, and understand possible approaches to addressing housing difficulties. Adequate knowledge can help adults develop more informed perspectives on housing decisions and participate constructively in community discussions about urban development. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing relevant information and opportunities for learners to examine housing issues from practical and community-based perspectives. Improved knowledge may therefore increase adults’ awareness of the relationship between housing conditions, urban development, infrastructure, population growth, and community wellbeing. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of urban housing challenges. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of urban housing challenges. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of urban housing challenges. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of housing shortages, affordability difficulties, overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, housing quality concerns, and other challenges associated with urban housing. The study may also establish that case studies, community observations, and practical discussions contribute to better understanding of complex housing issues. Such findings would highlight the value of adult education in developing adults’ awareness of housing conditions and the broader factors influencing urban communities. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, programme facilitators, urban development educators, and curriculum developers. Relevant Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical housing and urban-development topics that enable learners to understand the challenges affecting residential communities. Facilitators can use photographs, case studies, community observations, discussions, and problem-based activities to help adults examine housing conditions and their underlying factors. These approaches can encourage learners to develop informed perspectives on housing quality, affordability, infrastructure, accessibility, and sustainable urban development. The study will be significant to adult learners, educators, community organizations, urban development stakeholders, housing practitioners, and policymakers interested in improving community living conditions. It will provide useful information on how adult education can strengthen adults’ knowledge of urban housing challenges and support informed participation in discussions concerning housing and urban development. The study will recommend the inclusion of relevant housing and urban-development concepts in appropriate Adult Education programmes and encourage practical learning activities based on real community housing conditions. It will conclude that strengthening adults’ knowledge through adult education can promote greater awareness of urban housing challenges and support more informed participation in efforts to improve housing and community environments.
