Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Upholstery Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their personal, vocational, and economic development. Upholstery is a practical craft that involves the use of fabrics, foam, leather, tools, and other materials to repair, cover, and improve furniture and related items. However, limited access to appropriate learning opportunities may affect adults’ knowledge of upholstery techniques. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of upholstery techniques. Adult education programmes in upholstery may expose learners to different aspects of upholstery work, including identification and selection of materials, measurement, cutting, foam preparation, fabric handling, stitching, covering, fastening, and finishing. Learning activities may involve demonstrations, discussions, practical exercises, supervised projects, and repeated use of upholstery tools and materials. These activities can enable adults to develop familiarity with upholstery procedures and understand the appropriate application of different techniques in practical situations. Adults’ knowledge of upholstery techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, processes, and procedures required to carry out basic upholstery work effectively. This may include knowledge of furniture preparation, material selection, measurement, foam placement, fabric cutting, stitching, covering, fastening, and finishing procedures. Adult education can improve this knowledge by combining relevant explanations with practical demonstrations and hands-on activities that allow learners to observe and practise appropriate upholstery techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an upholstery techniques knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant materials, tools, and procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of upholstery techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of upholstery techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of material selection, measurement, foam preparation, fabric cutting, stitching, covering, fastening, and finishing procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations, supervised exercises, and repeated practice contribute substantially to adults’ understanding of upholstery processes and the appropriate use of upholstery tools and materials. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective avenue for developing adults’ knowledge of upholstery techniques. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide adequate practical sessions, relevant upholstery tools and materials, demonstrations, supervised projects, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ knowledge of upholstery techniques may contribute to vocational competence, creativity, self-reliance, furniture repair skills, small-scale enterprise development, and income-generating opportunities
