Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Tailoring Equipment

Abstract

Tailoring equipment plays an important role in clothing production because appropriate equipment enables individuals to perform sewing, cutting, measuring, pressing, and finishing activities effectively. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support tailoring activities, vocational development, and income generation. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the different equipment used in tailoring due to inadequate exposure to structured practical learning. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of tailoring equipment. Adult education in tailoring may expose learners to different equipment such as sewing machines, measuring tools, cutting equipment, pressing equipment, and other items used in garment production. Learning activities may involve demonstrations, equipment identification, guided practice, and practical exercises that enable adults to understand the functions and appropriate uses of different equipment. These experiences can help learners develop familiarity with tailoring equipment and understand how each item contributes to different stages of garment production. Adults’ knowledge of tailoring equipment refers to their ability to identify, describe, classify, and explain the functions and appropriate uses of equipment used in tailoring. This may include knowledge of sewing machines, scissors, measuring tapes, rulers, pressing equipment, cutting tools, and other relevant equipment. Effective adult education may improve this knowledge by allowing learners to observe, handle, and practise using different equipment under appropriate guidance. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education, vocational, or tailoring programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a tailoring equipment knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant equipment, their functions, and appropriate uses. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of tailoring equipment. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education may improve adults’ knowledge of tailoring equipment. Adults exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of equipment identification, functions, appropriate uses, handling, and basic maintenance. The findings may also indicate that demonstrations and hands-on learning activities are particularly useful for helping adults develop familiarity with tailoring equipment and its applications. The study will conclude that adult education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of tailoring equipment. It will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, relevant tailoring equipment, guided exercises, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ knowledge of tailoring equipment may contribute to better practical performance, vocational competence, garment production skills, self-employment, and income-generating opportunities.
