Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Sign Language Basics
Abstract
Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge and skills that promote effective communication, social inclusion, and participation in community life. Sign language is a visual-gestural form of communication that uses hand movements, facial expressions, body movements, and specific signs to convey meaning. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of sign language basics. The study will focus on how educational experiences can improve adults’ awareness of basic sign language concepts and their ability to understand its importance in communicating with persons who use sign language. Adult Education can introduce learners to basic sign language concepts, common signs, fingerspelling, simple expressions, and appropriate communication practices. Through demonstrations, visual learning materials, guided practice, and interactive activities, adults can become familiar with basic signs and understand how visual communication can support interaction with persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Such learning experiences may also reduce uncertainty about communicating across different communication needs and encourage greater awareness of inclusive communication practices. Adults’ knowledge of sign language basics involves their understanding of common signs, basic fingerspelling, simple communication expressions, and the role of sign language in inclusive communication. Adequate knowledge can help adults recognize commonly used signs and appreciate the importance of sign language in enabling persons who use it to participate in social, educational, workplace, and community activities. Adult Education may strengthen this knowledge by providing practical exposure to basic signs and opportunities for adults to observe and practise simple sign language communication. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of sign language basics. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of sign language basics. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of sign language basics. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may demonstrate improved understanding of basic signs, fingerspelling, simple expressions, and appropriate communication practices. The study may further establish that practical demonstrations and guided activities can increase adults’ familiarity with sign language and strengthen their awareness of its importance in promoting inclusive communication. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community learning facilitators, disability-support organisations, and inclusive communication advocates. Incorporating basic sign language activities into Adult Education programmes may provide adults with practical knowledge that can be applied when interacting with persons who use sign language. Demonstrations, guided practice, and visual learning activities may also make sign language concepts more accessible and encourage adults to develop greater confidence in basic communication. The study will be significant to adult learners, persons who use sign language, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, disability-support groups, and other stakeholders interested in promoting inclusive communication. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes should include introductory sign language activities that expose adults to basic signs, fingerspelling, and simple communication expressions. The study concludes that Adult Education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of sign language basics and promoting more inclusive communication within communities.
