Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Residential Safety Features
Abstract
Residential safety features are physical and functional elements incorporated into homes to reduce hazards, protect occupants, and promote safe living conditions. Adult Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge about the purpose, identification, and appropriate use of these features within residential environments. This study will examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of residential safety features. The study is important because inadequate knowledge of safety features may limit adults’ ability to recognize available protective measures and respond appropriately to potential household hazards. Adult Education can expose adults to knowledge of residential safety features such as smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, handrails, secure locks, adequate lighting, electrical safety devices, and appropriate ventilation systems. Through discussions, demonstrations, illustrations, practical activities, and household-based examples, adults can learn the functions and importance of these features. Such learning can also help adults understand how safety features contribute to accident prevention, emergency preparedness, accessibility, and general household security. Adults’ knowledge of residential safety features involves their ability to identify different safety provisions, understand their purposes, and recognize appropriate situations in which they should be used. Adequate knowledge can help adults assess basic safety conditions within their homes and identify areas where protective features may be absent, inadequate, or improperly used. Adult Education can therefore strengthen this knowledge by connecting learning experiences with practical residential safety situations and encouraging adults to apply acquired information in their everyday environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of residential safety features. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of residential safety features. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of residential safety features. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of safety provisions, their functions, and appropriate household applications. The study may further establish that practical learning approaches, particularly demonstrations and visual learning activities, are useful for improving adults’ understanding of residential safety features and their contribution to safer living environments. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, housing organizations, and programme planners. Relevant Adult Education programmes may incorporate practical residential safety activities that allow adults to examine safety features and understand their functions through real-life examples. Demonstrations, household safety checklists, illustrations, and problem-solving exercises can make learning more practical and encourage adults to apply safety knowledge within their homes. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, and housing stakeholders by providing information on the role of education in strengthening residential safety knowledge. It will recommend greater inclusion of practical residential safety content in appropriate Adult Education programmes and the use of learner-centred activities that relate directly to household experiences. The study will conclude that Adult Education can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of residential safety features and supporting safer and more informed household practices.
