Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Negotiation Techniques

Abstract

Negotiation techniques are practical approaches used by individuals to communicate interests, manage differences, reach agreements, and resolve disagreements in a constructive manner. Adult education provides structured opportunities through which adults can acquire relevant knowledge, develop practical understanding, and improve their ability to respond appropriately to interpersonal and community situations. Since adults encounter situations involving different interests, expectations, and opinions in their families, workplaces, businesses, and communities, knowledge of effective negotiation techniques is important for promoting cooperation and peaceful resolution of differences. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of negotiation techniques. Adult education can provide learning experiences through group discussions, demonstrations, role-playing, case studies, simulations, problem-solving exercises, and interactive dialogue. These approaches can expose adults to important negotiation concepts such as preparation, active listening, clear communication, identification of interests, generation of alternatives, compromise, and agreement-building. Participatory learning can also enable adults to examine realistic situations and consider appropriate ways of responding to competing interests. Through continuous engagement with relevant learning activities, adults may develop a clearer understanding of how negotiation techniques can be used in everyday situations. Adults’ knowledge of negotiation techniques refers to their ability to identify, explain, distinguish, and appropriately describe strategies used to achieve mutually acceptable outcomes during negotiations. Such knowledge may include understanding preparation, communication, active listening, questioning, persuasion, compromise, bargaining, problem-solving, and agreement-making. Adequate knowledge can help adults approach disagreements more constructively and recognize techniques that encourage cooperation rather than unnecessary confrontation. Adult education is expected to improve this knowledge by exposing participants to relevant concepts and practical learning experiences that connect negotiation principles with real-life situations. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and community learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of negotiation techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of negotiation techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of negotiation techniques. It is anticipated that adults who participate in relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved understanding of negotiation preparation, active listening, communication, bargaining, compromise, problem-solving, and agreement-building. The findings may further show that participatory learning methods help adults understand how different negotiation techniques can be applied to practical situations involving competing interests and disagreements. This would demonstrate the value of adult education in developing knowledge that supports constructive interaction. The study may have useful implications for adult educators, community facilitators, workplace trainers, and organizations involved in adult learning and community development. Adult Education programmes can incorporate negotiation-related content into learning activities and employ practical methods such as role-playing, simulations, group discussions, and case studies. Facilitators can also use familiar situations to help adults understand the differences between constructive and unproductive approaches to negotiation. Strengthening adults’ knowledge in this area may improve their preparedness to handle disagreements and reach mutually acceptable agreements. The study is significant because improved knowledge of negotiation techniques can contribute to more constructive communication, cooperation, and peaceful management of differences among adults. It is recommended that Adult Education programmes provide learning opportunities that expose participants to practical negotiation concepts and encourage active participation in realistic negotiation situations. Adult educators should also emphasize communication, listening, problem-solving, compromise, and agreement-building within relevant learning activities. The study concludes that adult education can provide an effective educational foundation for improving adults’ knowledge of negotiation techniques and strengthening their capacity to manage differences constructively.
