Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Geology
Abstract
Geology is the scientific study of the Earth, including its physical structure, materials, history, processes, and the changes that occur within and on its surface. Knowledge of geology helps adults understand rocks, minerals, soil formation, landforms, earthquakes, erosion, and other processes that shape the environment. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire scientific knowledge through structured learning experiences that connect theoretical concepts with everyday observations. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of geology, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of basic geological concepts and processes. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to develop knowledge and practical understanding through discussions, demonstrations, visual resources, field-based activities, and experience-oriented learning. In geology education, adults may be introduced to different types of rocks and minerals, geological formations, soil processes, erosion, weathering, plate movements, and the formation of landforms. Learning activities may include the use of rock samples, geological diagrams, maps, models, photographs, videos, and guided environmental observations. These approaches can make geological concepts more accessible and help adults relate scientific explanations to features they encounter in their surroundings. Adults’ knowledge of geology refers to their understanding of the materials, structures, processes, and historical changes associated with the Earth. Such knowledge enables adults to recognize basic geological features and understand processes such as weathering, erosion, sedimentation, volcanic activity, and the formation of different rock types. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for learners to observe geological materials, compare geological features, and discuss the processes responsible for changes in the Earth’s surface. Improved geological knowledge can also contribute to adults’ environmental awareness and their ability to make informed decisions concerning natural resources and their surroundings. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of geology. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of geology. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of geology. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of rocks, minerals, geological processes, landforms, soil formation, erosion, and other basic geological concepts. The study may also establish that practical materials, visual resources, demonstrations, and environmental observations are useful in helping adults connect geological concepts with features found in their everyday surroundings. The study will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, science educators, environmental educators, facilitators, and programme developers. It will emphasize the importance of using practical and visual learning resources when presenting geological concepts to adult learners. Facilitators may use rock samples, models, diagrams, maps, photographs, environmental observations, and guided discussions to make geological learning more meaningful. These approaches can encourage active participation and help adults develop scientific knowledge that can be applied to environmental and community-related situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, science educators, environmental organizations, community learning programmes, and researchers interested in adult scientific literacy. It will recommend increased use of practical and experience-based learning activities to improve adults’ understanding of geological concepts and processes. The study will conclude that effective adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ knowledge of geology and strengthening their ability to understand the Earth, its materials, and the natural processes that shape the environment.
