Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Emergency Contact Procedures

Abstract

Emergency contact procedures refer to the appropriate steps involved in identifying, locating, and communicating with relevant emergency services, organizations, or trusted contacts when urgent situations occur. Knowledge of these procedures is important because timely and accurate communication can support appropriate responses during accidents, sudden hazards, security incidents, and other emergencies. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can be applied to everyday safety situations. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of emergency contact procedures, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of appropriate contacts, communication processes, and information to provide during emergencies. Adult education provides opportunities for adults to develop practical knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, simulations, visual materials, role-playing, and experience-based activities. In relation to emergency contact procedures, adults can learn how to identify appropriate emergency services, locate relevant contact information, communicate essential details, and provide accurate information about the nature and location of an emergency. Learning activities may include emergency communication scenarios, demonstrations, contact-information exercises, and guided discussions. These approaches can help adults become more familiar with emergency communication processes and understand the importance of providing clear and relevant information when seeking assistance. Adults’ knowledge of emergency contact procedures refers to their understanding of the appropriate contacts, communication channels, information requirements, and steps involved in seeking assistance during emergency situations. This knowledge enables adults to determine whom to contact, what information to communicate, and how to respond appropriately when urgent assistance is required. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by exposing learners to realistic emergency scenarios and providing opportunities to practise appropriate communication procedures. Improved knowledge may increase adults’ preparedness and confidence when responding to emergencies that require external assistance. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of emergency contact procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of emergency contact procedures. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of emergency contact procedures. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of appropriate emergency contacts, communication channels, essential information, and procedures for requesting assistance. The study may also establish that practical simulations and scenario-based learning are useful in helping adults develop greater confidence and accuracy when communicating during emergency situations. The study will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, emergency-preparedness facilitators, safety educators, and programme developers. It will emphasize the importance of incorporating practical emergency communication activities into relevant adult learning programmes. Facilitators may use emergency scenarios, communication simulations, visual materials, contact-information exercises, and guided discussions to strengthen learners’ understanding of appropriate procedures. These approaches can make emergency preparedness more practical and help adults apply their knowledge effectively when urgent situations occur. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, community organizations, emergency-response agencies, safety educators, and researchers interested in functional safety education. It will recommend greater integration of emergency contact procedures into appropriate adult learning and community education programmes. The study will conclude that effective adult education can play an important role in improving adults’ knowledge of emergency contact procedures and strengthening their preparedness to communicate accurately and seek appropriate assistance during emergency situations.
