Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Mediation Procedures
Abstract
Community mediation procedures involve structured approaches through which individuals or groups address disagreements, communicate their concerns, explore possible solutions, and work toward mutually acceptable resolutions. Knowledge of these procedures enables adults to understand appropriate steps for managing community disputes and promoting peaceful relationships. Inadequate knowledge may contribute to misunderstanding, escalation of conflicts, and inappropriate approaches to resolving disagreements. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge about communication, negotiation, dialogue, and peaceful conflict resolution. This study therefore examines the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of community mediation procedures. Adult Education in this context involves structured learning activities designed to introduce adults to the basic principles and procedures of community mediation. Such activities may include discussions, role-playing exercises, case-study analysis, demonstrations, group activities, and guided problem-solving sessions. Learners may be introduced to procedures such as identifying the issues in dispute, allowing parties to express their concerns, maintaining neutrality, clarifying areas of disagreement, exploring possible solutions, and documenting agreed outcomes. Practical learning activities can help adults understand how mediation procedures are applied in different community situations. Knowledge of community mediation procedures refers to adults’ understanding of the stages, principles, roles, communication processes, and appropriate practices involved in resolving community disputes through mediation. Adults with adequate knowledge are better positioned to recognize when mediation may be appropriate and understand the procedures involved in facilitating constructive dialogue. Adult Education can strengthen this knowledge by combining explanations with practical scenarios, role-play, discussion, and guided analysis of conflict situations. Such learning experiences may improve adults’ understanding of peaceful dispute-resolution processes and responsible participation in community affairs. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, community learning, or civic education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of community mediation procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ knowledge of community mediation procedures. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of community mediation procedures. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of mediation stages, communication processes, neutrality, issue identification, dialogue, negotiation, and agreement development. The study may further indicate that role-playing, case-study analysis, and guided discussions contribute substantially to improved knowledge because learners can examine realistic conflict situations and consider appropriate mediation procedures. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, community learning facilitators, civic educators, community development practitioners, and organisations involved in peacebuilding activities. Adult Education programmes should provide opportunities for learners to examine practical community disputes and understand appropriate mediation procedures. Role-playing and case-based activities can help adults develop a clearer understanding of constructive communication and peaceful dispute resolution. Improved knowledge may support more informed participation in community affairs and encourage the use of appropriate channels for addressing disagreements. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an effective means of improving adults’ knowledge of community mediation procedures. It will recommend that relevant programmes incorporate discussions, case studies, role-playing activities, mediation simulations, and guided analysis of community conflict situations. Adult educators should provide learners with opportunities to understand the responsibilities of parties involved in mediation and the importance of impartial communication. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful knowledge for peaceful community interaction and constructive dispute resolution.
