Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Community Architecture
Abstract
Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge that can improve their understanding of the physical, social, and cultural environments in which they live. Community architecture refers to the design, planning, organization, and development of buildings and shared physical spaces within communities in ways that respond to the needs, activities, identity, and wellbeing of residents. Adults’ knowledge of community architecture is important because community members interact with residential buildings, public spaces, markets, schools, health facilities, recreational areas, roads, and other structures that influence everyday life. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community architecture, with the purpose of determining whether adult education can improve their understanding of architectural principles and the role of the built environment in community development. Adult education can introduce learners to basic architectural concepts through discussions, visual materials, demonstrations, community observations, practical activities, and experience-based learning. In relation to community architecture, learning activities may expose adults to concepts such as building functionality, accessibility, spatial organization, environmental suitability, safety, aesthetics, and the relationship between buildings and community activities. Participants may also learn how architectural decisions can influence movement, interaction, comfort, environmental quality, and the effective use of shared spaces. By connecting architectural concepts with familiar buildings and community environments, adult education can make technical ideas easier for adults to understand. Adults’ knowledge of community architecture refers to their ability to identify basic architectural features, explain the purposes of different community structures, recognize principles of functional and accessible design, and understand how the built environment affects community activities. Adequate knowledge can help adults appreciate the importance of safe, accessible, functional, and environmentally appropriate buildings and public spaces. Adult education can strengthen this knowledge by providing opportunities for learners to observe and discuss existing community structures and examine how architectural decisions influence their use. Improved knowledge may also enable adults to participate more meaningfully in discussions concerning community facilities, physical development, and the improvement of shared spaces. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of community architecture. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on adults’ knowledge of community architecture. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of community architecture. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of building functions, accessibility, spatial organization, environmental considerations, safety, and the relationship between architectural design and community needs. The study may also establish that visual materials, community observation, and practical discussions contribute to better understanding of architectural concepts. Such findings would demonstrate the potential of adult education to improve adults’ awareness of how the built environment influences community life and development. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, programme facilitators, and curriculum developers. Relevant Adult Education programmes may incorporate basic architectural and built-environment concepts where these are connected to learners’ community needs. Facilitators can use photographs, community observations, building examples, discussions, and simple practical activities to help adults understand architectural principles without requiring advanced technical training. These approaches can encourage learners to recognize the importance of accessibility, safety, functionality, environmental suitability, and appropriate use of community spaces. The study will be significant to adult learners, educators, community organizations, development practitioners, local planners, and other stakeholders interested in community development and the built environment. It will provide useful information on how adult education can improve adults’ knowledge of community architecture and support informed participation in discussions about physical development. The study will recommend the inclusion of relevant built-environment concepts in appropriate Adult Education programmes and encourage practical learning activities based on learners’ existing communities. It will conclude that strengthening adults’ knowledge through adult education can promote greater awareness of architectural design and support more informed participation in community development activities.
