Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Calendar Dates

Abstract

Calendar dates provide important information for identifying days, months, years, schedules, appointments, deadlines, and significant events. The ability to interpret calendar dates is an essential functional skill because adults frequently encounter dates in official documents, notices, appointments, work schedules, educational activities, and everyday transactions. However, difficulty understanding date formats and relationships between dates can affect adults’ ability to manage routine activities effectively. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to interpret calendar dates. Adult education can provide learners with practical knowledge about days, weeks, months, years, date formats, sequences, and relationships between different calendar dates. Through demonstrations, calendar exercises, practical examples, and guided activities, adults can learn to identify specific dates, distinguish between different date representations, and determine the position of a date within a calendar. Such activities can strengthen their ability to use calendar information in everyday situations. Adults’ ability to interpret calendar dates refers to their capacity to correctly identify, read, compare, and understand information represented by dates on calendars and other written materials. This includes recognizing days and months, understanding date sequences, identifying dates associated with events, and interpreting common date formats. Adult education can improve these abilities by providing structured instruction and practical exercises that connect calendar concepts with real-life activities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical date-interpretation assessment designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ ability to interpret calendar dates. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to interpret calendar dates. It is expected that adults who receive relevant educational instruction will demonstrate improved ability to recognize dates, understand date sequences, distinguish between date formats, and correctly relate calendar dates to everyday activities and schedules. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Facilitators can incorporate calendars, date-based exercises, event schedules, appointment examples, and practical activities into lessons. Regular opportunities to practise identifying and interpreting dates can make learning more meaningful and strengthen adults’ confidence in applying calendar skills. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, community learning centres, employers, and organizations involved in adult literacy development. Adults may benefit from improved ability to manage appointments, deadlines, schedules, and other activities involving dates. Facilitators can also use the findings to develop more practical approaches to teaching functional literacy skills. The study will recommend that calendar interpretation activities be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use real-life calendars, simple date formats, schedules, and practical exercises to strengthen adults’ ability to understand calendar information. The study concludes that effective adult education can improve adults’ ability to interpret calendar dates and apply this functional skill to everyday activities.
