Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Appropriate Workplace Communication Channels

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with knowledge and practical skills that can improve their ability to function effectively in different areas of life, including the workplace. Identifying appropriate workplace communication channels is important because employees need to know whether a concern, instruction, request, or piece of information should be communicated through verbal discussion, email, telephone, messaging platforms, formal reports, or other established channels. Difficulty in selecting suitable communication channels may result in delayed information, misunderstanding, or ineffective workplace interactions. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify appropriate workplace communication channels. Adult education can equip learners with practical communication knowledge through structured instruction, discussions, demonstrations, and workplace-related learning activities. Such education may introduce adults to different communication channels and explain their appropriate uses, advantages, limitations, and expected professional standards. Scenario-based exercises can further enable learners to examine workplace situations and determine the most suitable method for communicating particular types of information. Adults’ ability to identify appropriate workplace communication channels refers to their capacity to recognize the communication method that best suits a particular workplace situation. This involves considering factors such as the urgency, nature, sensitivity, formality, and intended recipient of the information. Adult education is expected to strengthen this ability by helping learners understand how different communication channels function and when each may be appropriately used. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners or workers, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a scenario-based assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to select appropriate workplace communication channels. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to relevant adult education demonstrate improved ability to identify appropriate workplace communication channels. Participants are also expected to show greater understanding of how the nature and urgency of workplace information influence the choice of communication method. Such knowledge may enable adults to communicate workplace information more efficiently and appropriately. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education practice by emphasizing the importance of practical workplace communication knowledge in adult learning programmes. Adult educators can incorporate realistic workplace scenarios, communication simulations, group discussions, and decision-making exercises to help learners practise selecting suitable communication channels. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, employees, workplace trainers, educators, and employers interested in improving workplace communication practices. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include practical instruction on workplace communication channels and their appropriate applications. Educators should provide learners with opportunities to evaluate different workplace situations and select suitable communication methods based on the circumstances. It is concluded that adult education can improve adults’ ability to identify appropriate workplace communication channels and support more effective and professional communication in work environments.
