Impact of Transaction Authorization Exercises on Students’ Understanding of Internal Control Procedures in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Internal control procedures are essential components of effective accounting and financial management because they help organizations safeguard assets, prevent and detect errors and fraud, ensure proper authorization of transactions, maintain reliable financial records, and promote accountability. Accounting personnel are expected to understand how transactions are initiated, reviewed, approved, documented, and monitored in accordance with established organizational procedures. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to practise transaction authorization procedures in realistic accounting environments, which may create a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of internal controls. Transaction Authorization Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to examine business transactions, determine appropriate authorization requirements, verify supporting documents, apply approval procedures, and identify transactions that do not comply with established controls. These exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of authorization processes and their ability to apply internal control procedures in accounting situations. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Transaction Authorization Exercises on students’ understanding of internal control procedures in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Agency Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical knowledge through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Agency Theory explains the importance of control and monitoring mechanisms in reducing conflicts of interest, information asymmetry, misuse of organizational resources, and opportunistic behaviour between principals and agents. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Transaction Authorization Exercises may influence students’ understanding of internal control procedures. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, internal control knowledge assessment scales, transaction authorization tasks, simulated business documents, approval forms, authorization checklists, practical performance rubrics, observation schedules, case scenarios, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Transaction Authorization Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as transaction initiation, transaction identification, transaction classification, authorization requirements, approval levels, authorized personnel identification, approval-limit determination, transaction-value assessment, signature verification, authorization-signature matching, supporting-document verification, invoice verification, receipt verification, payment-voucher verification, purchase-order verification, delivery-note verification, payroll-document verification, expense-document verification, bank-transaction verification, electronic-transaction verification, authorization evidence, approval documentation, authorization sequencing, approval routing, segregation of duties, authorization controls, supervisory controls, management approval, departmental approval, financial approval, budget approval, procurement approval, payment approval, expenditure approval, cash-disbursement approval, credit approval, purchase approval, sales approval, payroll approval, supplier-payment approval, electronic-payment approval, transfer authorization, cheque authorization, voucher authorization, journal-entry authorization, adjustment authorization, refund authorization, discount authorization, credit-note authorization, debit-note authorization, write-off authorization, asset-disposal authorization, expense authorization, petty-cash authorization, imprest authorization, travel-expense authorization, reimbursement authorization, overtime authorization, staff-advance authorization, conflict-of-interest identification, unauthorized-transaction identification, incomplete-authorization identification, missing-signature identification, incorrect-signature identification, forged-signature awareness, expired-authorization identification, excessive-authorization identification, duplicate-approval identification, bypassed-control identification, approval-limit violation, unauthorized expenditure identification, unsupported-transaction identification, suspicious-transaction identification, fraudulent-transaction awareness, transaction-error identification, documentation-error identification, authorization-error identification, control-violation identification, exception reporting, control documentation, internal-control documentation, audit-trail maintenance, transaction tracking, authorization records, approval registers, document filing, authorization-file management, electronic approval records, digital authorization procedures, accounting-software authorization controls, access controls, user permissions, password controls, role-based access, transaction limits, system-based approval, electronic signatures, workflow approval, transaction monitoring, review procedures, verification procedures, follow-up procedures, corrective-action procedures, internal-control reporting, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging authorization scenarios. Students’ understanding of internal control procedures will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify transactions requiring authorization, determine appropriate approval levels, identify authorized personnel, assess transaction values against approval limits, verify signatures, match signatures with authorized personnel, verify supporting documents, examine invoices, verify receipts, examine payment vouchers, verify purchase orders, examine delivery notes, verify payroll documents, verify expense documents, examine bank transactions, verify electronic transactions, identify authorization evidence, understand approval documentation, follow authorization sequences, understand approval routing, apply segregation of duties, recognize authorization controls, understand supervisory controls, identify management approval requirements, identify departmental approval requirements, recognize financial approval procedures, understand budget approval, identify procurement approval, understand payment approval, recognize expenditure approval, understand cash-disbursement authorization, recognize credit approval, understand purchase authorization, understand sales authorization, recognize payroll approval, understand supplier-payment approval, recognize electronic-payment authorization, understand transfer authorization, verify cheque authorization, verify voucher authorization, understand journal-entry authorization, recognize adjustment authorization, understand refund authorization, recognize discount authorization, understand credit-note authorization, understand debit-note authorization, recognize write-off authorization, understand asset-disposal authorization, recognize expense authorization, understand petty-cash authorization, recognize imprest authorization, understand travel-expense authorization, recognize reimbursement authorization, understand overtime authorization, recognize staff-advance authorization, identify conflicts of interest, detect unauthorized transactions, identify incomplete authorization, identify missing signatures, identify incorrect signatures, recognize potential signature manipulation, identify expired authorization, identify excessive authorization, detect duplicate approvals, recognize bypassed controls, identify approval-limit violations, identify unauthorized expenditures, recognize unsupported transactions, identify suspicious transactions, recognize potential fraud risks, identify transaction errors, identify documentation errors, identify authorization errors, identify control violations, prepare exception reports, document internal controls, maintain audit trails, track transactions, maintain authorization records, update approval registers, file authorization documents, manage authorization records, maintain electronic approval records, follow digital authorization procedures, understand accounting-software authorization controls, apply access controls, understand user permissions, apply password controls, understand role-based access, observe transaction limits, use system-based approval procedures, understand electronic signatures, follow workflow approval, monitor transactions, conduct reviews, perform verification procedures, follow up exceptions, implement corrective actions, prepare internal-control reports, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate control awareness, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate adaptability, and overall understanding of internal control procedures. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Transaction Authorization Exercises, practical experiences, and levels of internal control understanding. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Transaction Authorization Exercises on students’ understanding of internal control procedures. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, internal control understanding scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Transaction Authorization Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ understanding of internal control procedures in Nigerian polytechnics.
