Impact of Stock Card Practicals on Students’ Inventory Recording Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Inventory recording is an essential practical accounting competency that enables organizations to maintain accurate information about the quantity, movement, and balance of goods held for sale or production. Effective inventory recording requires proper documentation of stock receipts, issues, returns, transfers, adjustments, and closing balances, as well as accurate maintenance of stock cards and supporting inventory records. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited opportunities to practise stock-recording procedures using realistic inventory transactions, which may create a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical accounting competence. Stock Card Practicals provide students with opportunities to record, update, monitor, and reconcile inventory movements using simulated business transactions and stock documentation. These practical activities may strengthen students’ ability to maintain accurate inventory records and develop practical skills required in accounting workplaces. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Stock Card Practicals on students’ inventory recording skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Stock Card Practicals may influence students’ inventory recording skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, inventory recording skills assessment scales, simulated stock cards, stores records, goods-received notes, material requisition forms, issue notes, inventory transaction exercises, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, inventory recording skill scores before and after participation in the practical activities may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Stock Card Practicals have a significant positive impact on students’ inventory recording skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured stock-card practical activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to document, record, update, monitor, and reconcile inventory transactions. Stock-card identification and preparation activities may improve students’ understanding of the purpose and structure of inventory records. Item-identification and stock-code exercises may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish inventory items accurately. Product-description activities may improve the clarity of inventory records. Unit-of-measure activities may strengthen recording accuracy. Date-recording activities may improve the chronological organization of stock transactions. Supplier-identification exercises may strengthen students’ ability to associate stock receipts with appropriate suppliers. Quantity-received and quantity-issued exercises may improve students’ ability to document inventory movements accurately. Return and transfer activities may strengthen students’ ability to record different forms of stock movement. Opening- and closing-stock exercises may improve students’ understanding of inventory balances. Stock-balance calculations may strengthen numerical accuracy and inventory monitoring. Goods-received and issue-documentation exercises may improve students’ ability to connect source documents with stock records. Purchase-return and sales-return activities may strengthen students’ ability to account for returned inventory. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, technology-supported, workplace-oriented, and adequately supervised Stock Card Practicals to contribute significantly to improved inventory recording skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria.
