Impact of Savings Education on Financial Saving Behaviour among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Financial saving is an important aspect of personal financial management because it enables students to prepare for future expenses, manage financial emergencies, develop financial discipline, and improve their overall financial well-being. Accounting Education students are expected to possess financial knowledge and skills that can support responsible financial decision-making; however, possessing accounting knowledge does not necessarily guarantee effective personal saving behaviour. Students may experience challenges such as limited income, poor budgeting practices, impulsive spending, peer influence, inadequate financial planning, and limited awareness of appropriate saving strategies. Savings education provides students with practical knowledge about the importance of saving, saving methods, financial planning, budgeting, financial goals, and responsible money management. Such education may improve students’ understanding of saving and encourage the development of consistent and responsible saving practices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Savings Education on financial saving behaviour among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on the Financial Literacy Theory, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Social Cognitive Theory. Financial Literacy Theory explains how financial knowledge and understanding may improve individuals’ ability to make informed financial decisions and manage their resources effectively. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students’ attitudes toward saving, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and intentions may influence their actual saving behaviour. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, environmental influences, reinforcement, and personal experiences in shaping financial behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Savings Education may influence financial saving behaviour among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Savings Education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to saving education programmes, knowledge of saving principles, importance of saving, personal financial planning, budgeting, financial goal setting, emergency savings, short-term and long-term saving, saving methods, bank savings, digital savings, automated savings, regular saving, saving discipline, interest and returns on savings, inflation awareness, financial risk awareness, responsible use of financial services, saving challenges, spending control, needs and wants differentiation, delayed gratification, financial decision-making, record keeping, monitoring of savings, financial counselling, practical saving exercises, financial simulations, educational workshops, individual assignments, group activities, and feedback. Financial saving behaviour will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of saving, consistency of saving, amount saved, proportion of income or allowance saved, regularity of deposits, achievement of saving targets, maintenance of emergency savings, use of formal saving channels, use of bank savings accounts, use of digital savings platforms, automated saving practices, separation of savings from spending funds, budgeting for savings, monitoring of saving progress, reduction of unnecessary expenditure, delayed gratification, financial goal orientation, saving before spending, resistance to impulsive purchases, maintenance of financial records, review of account balances, planning for future expenses, preparation for emergencies, and overall saving discipline. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial literacy and saving-behaviour scales, savings records where voluntarily available, financial planning exercises, budgeting tasks, practical saving scenarios, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, financial knowledge, exposure to Savings Education, saving attitudes, and saving behaviour. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Savings Education on financial saving behaviour. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, saving-behaviour scores before and after exposure to Savings Education may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Savings Education has a significant positive impact on financial saving behaviour among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured Savings Education are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of saving principles and more consistent financial saving practices than students without comparable exposure. Education on the importance of saving may improve students’ understanding of the role of savings in achieving financial stability. Personal financial planning activities may strengthen students’ ability to allocate available resources toward future financial needs. Budgeting education may improve students’ ability to identify income, control expenditure, and create room for regular savings. Financial goal-setting exercises may encourage students to establish realistic short-term and long-term saving targets. Emergency-saving education may strengthen students’ preparedness for unexpected financial needs. Lessons on different saving methods may improve students’ ability to select appropriate saving channels. Bank-saving activities may increase students’ familiarity with formal financial institutions. Digital-saving education may improve students’ awareness of technology-supported saving opportunities. Automated-saving activities may encourage students to establish regular saving routines. Education on interest and returns may improve students’ understanding of how savings can grow over time. Inflation awareness may strengthen students’ understanding of the effects of changing prices on the value of savings. Financial-risk education may improve students’ ability to distinguish safe and appropriate saving practices from potentially risky financial arrangements. Needs-and-wants activities may strengthen students’ ability to prioritize essential expenditure over unnecessary consumption. Delayed-gratification exercises may improve students’ willingness to postpone immediate purchases in favour of future financial goals. Spending-control activities may reduce impulsive expenditure and increase the resources available for saving. Financial decision-making exercises may improve students’ ability to make informed choices regarding saving and spending. Record-keeping activities may strengthen students’ ability to monitor income, expenditure, and accumulated savings. Savings-monitoring exercises may improve students’ ability to track progress toward financial goals. Practical financial simulations may provide students with opportunities to apply saving principles to realistic financial situations. Educational workshops may increase awareness of practical saving strategies. Individual assignments may strengthen independent financial planning skills, while group activities may encourage discussion and exchange of saving experiences. Financial counselling and structured feedback may help students identify weaknesses in their saving practices and develop appropriate improvement strategies. However, the effectiveness of Savings Education may be constrained by limited student income, high educational expenses, rising living costs, inflationary pressures, peer influence, social spending expectations, impulsive consumption, limited access to suitable saving products, inadequate financial guidance, financial emergencies, poor budgeting habits, digital-financial risks, and inconsistent personal commitment to saving. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, continuous, and financially relevant Savings Education to contribute significantly to improved financial saving behaviour among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Savings Education, financial saving behaviour, financial literacy, personal financial management, financial planning, budgeting, saving discipline, financial goal setting, emergency savings, digital savings, financial decision-making, student financial behaviour, Accounting Education, university student financial well-being, and financial education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, financial education providers, banks, financial-technology organizations, student support services, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders regarding strategies for improving responsible financial behaviour among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical Savings Education into Accounting Education programmes, strengthening students’ financial planning and budgeting skills, promoting regular and goal-oriented saving practices, increasing awareness of formal and digital saving channels, encouraging emergency savings, improving students’ ability to control unnecessary expenditure, incorporating practical financial simulations into university instruction, providing financial counselling and guidance, and strengthening financial education initiatives aimed at improving the financial well-being of Accounting Education students in Nigeria.
