Impact of Receivables Management Exercises on Students’ Credit Management Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Receivables management is an important component of accounting and financial management education because it equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to manage credit sales, monitor amounts owed by customers, assess creditworthiness, control outstanding receivables, and improve cash collection. Accounting education students need practical competence in understanding credit policies, evaluating customer accounts, monitoring receivables ageing, estimating doubtful debts, and developing appropriate collection strategies. However, students may experience difficulties applying receivables management principles when instruction focuses mainly on theoretical explanations and routine calculations without sufficient exposure to realistic credit management situations. Receivables Management Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to analyse customer accounts, prepare receivables ageing schedules, evaluate credit policies, calculate collection periods, identify overdue accounts, estimate doubtful debts, and develop appropriate credit-control and collection strategies. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of receivables management exercises on students' credit management skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Credit Management Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical receivables management exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, prior knowledge, problem-solving, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Credit Management Theory emphasizes the effective assessment, monitoring, control, and collection of credit extended to customers while balancing sales opportunities with credit risk and liquidity considerations. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how receivables management exercises may influence students' credit management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Receivables management exercises will be assessed using indicators such as credit sales analysis, customer account analysis, credit policy evaluation, credit terms, credit limits, customer creditworthiness assessment, receivables ageing analysis, overdue account identification, average collection period, receivables turnover, doubtful debt estimation, allowance for doubtful debts, bad debt analysis, collection scheduling, credit-control procedures, customer account reconciliation, collection strategies, cash-flow implications of credit sales, credit risk assessment, monitoring of outstanding balances, realistic credit management cases, receivables simulations, spreadsheet-based receivables analysis, group problem-solving, individual exercises, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Students' credit management skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to evaluate customer creditworthiness, establish appropriate credit limits, interpret credit terms, analyse receivables ageing schedules, identify overdue accounts, calculate and interpret receivables turnover and collection periods, estimate doubtful debts, distinguish bad debts from doubtful debts, monitor outstanding customer balances, reconcile customer accounts, evaluate credit policies, develop appropriate collection strategies, assess credit risk, balance credit sales with liquidity considerations, identify potential collection problems, recommend appropriate credit-control measures, interpret receivables information, use spreadsheet tools for credit analysis, and apply credit management principles to unfamiliar business situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized credit management skills tests, practical receivables management tasks, customer account case studies, credit decision scenarios, receivables ageing exercises, spreadsheet-based activities, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to receivables management exercises, practical financial management experiences, and levels of credit management skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of receivables management exercises on students' credit management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, credit management skill scores before and after exposure to receivables management exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional accounting or financial management instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that receivables management exercises have a significant positive impact on students' credit management skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured and practical receivables management exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to assess customer creditworthiness, monitor outstanding receivables, analyse ageing schedules, evaluate credit risks, estimate doubtful debts, and develop effective collection strategies than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Practical customer-account analysis may help students understand how credit sales affect cash flow, liquidity, and overall financial performance. Receivables ageing exercises may strengthen students' ability to identify overdue accounts and prioritize collection activities, while creditworthiness assessment exercises may improve their ability to evaluate customer risk before credit is granted. Exercises involving credit limits and credit terms may help students understand how credit policies influence sales, profitability, liquidity, and exposure to bad debts. Doubtful-debt estimation and bad-debt analysis may further improve students' ability to recognize potential credit losses and incorporate appropriate allowances into accounting decisions. Collection strategy simulations may strengthen students' ability to respond to different customer payment behaviours and select appropriate credit-control measures. Spreadsheet-based receivables exercises may improve students' ability to organize customer information, monitor outstanding balances, perform ageing analysis, and identify collection trends efficiently. However, limited access to realistic customer-credit data, inadequate computer and spreadsheet facilities, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' difficulty integrating credit risk, profitability, and liquidity considerations may reduce the effectiveness of receivables management exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised receivables management exercises to contribute significantly to improved credit management skills among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on receivables management exercises, credit management skills, accounting education, financial management education, credit control, receivables ageing, credit risk assessment, experiential learning, constructivist learning, credit management theory, practical accounting skills, financial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, financial institutions, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical credit management education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical receivables management exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic customer-credit cases and simulations, strengthening students' ability to analyse receivables ageing and credit risk, incorporating spreadsheet-based credit management tools into instruction, improving students' understanding of credit policies and collection strategies, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, training accounting educators in practical receivables management techniques, developing competency-based credit management assessments, and aligning accounting education with the practical credit-control competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
