Impact of Practical Accounting Demonstrations on Students’ Understanding of Complex Accounting Procedures in Nigeria

Abstract

Practical accounting demonstrations are an important instructional strategy for helping students understand complex accounting procedures by allowing lecturers to visibly model accounting processes, calculations, documentation, and problem-solving techniques before students perform similar tasks independently. Accounting education students are expected to understand and apply complex procedures involving adjustments, financial statement preparation, partnership accounting, company accounting, costing, taxation, auditing, and other areas of accounting practice. However, students may experience difficulties understanding complex accounting procedures when instruction relies primarily on theoretical explanations, verbal descriptions, and textbook examples without sufficient opportunities to observe procedures being performed systematically. Practical Accounting Demonstrations provide students with opportunities to observe step-by-step accounting procedures, examine worked examples, identify common errors, ask questions, receive immediate clarification, and subsequently practise the demonstrated procedures. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of practical accounting demonstrations on students' understanding of complex accounting procedures in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Learning Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, and Experiential Learning Theory. Social Learning Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, imitation, and feedback, providing a suitable framework for lecturer-led demonstrations of accounting procedures. Cognitive Load Theory emphasizes the management of learners' limited working-memory capacity by organizing complex information into manageable steps, making it relevant to the teaching of complex accounting procedures. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' transition from observing demonstrations to independently practising accounting procedures. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how practical accounting demonstrations may influence students' understanding of complex accounting procedures. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Practical accounting demonstrations will be assessed using indicators such as lecturer modelling of accounting procedures, step-by-step demonstrations, worked accounting examples, transaction analysis demonstrations, adjustment-entry demonstrations, financial statement preparation demonstrations, partnership accounting demonstrations, company accounting demonstrations, costing procedure demonstrations, taxation procedure demonstrations, auditing procedure demonstrations, error-correction demonstrations, use of source documents, use of accounting schedules, use of accounting software, spreadsheet demonstrations, visual representation of accounting processes, verbal explanation during demonstrations, think-aloud explanations, identification of common errors, comparison of alternative procedures, guided practice following demonstrations, student questioning, immediate feedback, repeated demonstrations, progressive demonstration difficulty, individual practice, group practice, and opportunities for independent application. Students' understanding of complex accounting procedures will be assessed using indicators such as ability to explain accounting procedures, identify the purpose of individual procedural steps, sequence accounting procedures correctly, analyse complex accounting transactions, apply appropriate accounting principles, prepare adjustment entries, complete financial statement preparation procedures, perform partnership and company accounting procedures, apply costing procedures, interpret taxation procedures, perform basic auditing procedures, identify procedural errors, explain the causes of errors, correct accounting errors, apply procedures to unfamiliar situations, integrate multiple accounting procedures, interpret accounting information, solve multi-step accounting problems, retain procedural knowledge, transfer knowledge to new accounting situations, and perform complex accounting procedures independently. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized accounting procedure understanding tests, practical accounting tasks, observation checklists, competency-based assessment rubrics, worked-procedure assessments, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to practical accounting demonstrations, learning experiences, and levels of understanding of complex accounting procedures. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of practical accounting demonstrations on students' understanding of complex accounting procedures. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' understanding scores before and after exposure to practical accounting demonstrations may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that practical accounting demonstrations have a significant positive impact on students' understanding of complex accounting procedures in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and systematic practical demonstrations are expected to demonstrate stronger understanding of complex accounting procedures, improved procedural sequencing, greater accuracy, and better ability to apply accounting knowledge to unfamiliar situations than students receiving primarily theoretical instruction. Step-by-step demonstrations may help students break complex accounting tasks into manageable stages and understand the relationship between individual procedures. Adjustment-entry demonstrations may strengthen students' understanding of how accounting adjustments affect financial statements, while financial statement preparation demonstrations may help students connect accounting records, adjustments, and reporting outcomes. Partnership and company accounting demonstrations may improve students' understanding of complex procedures involving multiple accounts, capital structures, changes in ownership, and financial reporting requirements. Costing demonstrations may help students understand the sequence involved in cost accumulation, allocation, and analysis, while taxation demonstrations may clarify the application of accounting procedures to tax-related transactions and computations. Auditing demonstrations may help students understand evidence collection, working-paper preparation, error identification, and audit procedures. Lecturer think-aloud explanations may make the reasoning behind each procedural step more visible to students, while demonstrations of common errors may help students recognize and avoid frequent mistakes. Immediate feedback and guided practice following demonstrations may further strengthen students' understanding before independent performance. Digital demonstrations using accounting software and spreadsheets may also help students understand how complex accounting procedures are performed in contemporary accounting environments. However, inadequate access to accounting technology, large class sizes, limited instructional time, poor visibility or audibility during demonstrations, insufficient lecturer preparation, and students' weak foundational accounting knowledge may reduce the effectiveness of practical demonstrations. The study therefore expects clear, systematic, interactive, technology-supported, and well-supervised practical accounting demonstrations to contribute significantly to improved understanding of complex accounting procedures among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on practical accounting demonstrations, understanding of complex accounting procedures, accounting education, social learning, cognitive load theory, experiential learning, lecturer modelling, demonstration-based instruction, practical accounting education, procedural knowledge, accounting skills development, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical accounting instruction. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating practical accounting demonstrations into accounting education programmes, developing structured step-by-step demonstration materials, using worked examples and think-aloud explanations to clarify complex accounting procedures, incorporating accounting software and spreadsheet demonstrations, providing guided practice immediately after demonstrations, strengthening lecturer training in demonstration-based instructional methods, developing competency-based assessments of procedural understanding, and aligning accounting education with the practical procedural competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
